Need some help with heating and temperature control Helix vs Ranco

pj_farmer Sep 25, 2003 08:41 AM

I am working on heating my snake room and plan to put either a ranco or helix heating system to control my heat. The problem I am having is that I need some way to hook up the one space heater that I have so that it drops to mid 70s in the evening and mid 80s during the day. I knwo helix makes the night drop function for their helix, but I have read that its better to use the on/off type thermostat for a space/room heater rather then the helix. What do you guys think. I was thinking of buying two rancos and hooking them both up to timers but I couldn't figure out how to plug one heater into two rancos. Tell me what you guys think. Thanks everyone!!

Hey Paul what's up man.

Ok let me see if I'm understanding your query. In the day you want the room temp to be at mid 80 degrees with individual enclosures at approx. 80/cool, 90/warm. And at night you want the room temp to be at mid 70 degrees with individual enclosures at approx. 80/cool, 90/warm. Is that right? I'm assuming you're still running racks with belly heat.

I am using heat tape that runs down the back of the racks. I am also looking for some way to regulate my room temperature so that I can begin dropping the temperatures for the breeding season. I would like to be able to have my room automatically drop the temperature at night and rise during the day. I am just trying to figure out how to do that without getting two of everything.

Thanks so much!!
Paul

From what I have read you are correct in saying a non-proportional thermostat would be better for a space heater. The problem is that the fan needs to either be on or off on space heaters. One way of correcting this would be to re-wire the fan so it is on all the time, with only the heating element going on and off. Also you might consider using a heater that runs on a fuel of some sort. But through personal experience, I like Helix alot better then any other thermostat I have used. I know when I get around to making my room incubator, I will but a Helix 1500 watt room thermostat. I think it is the best on the market. Just my two cents.
