WILMA DIED !

TOM_CRUTCHFIELD Sep 04, 2010 10:48 AM

Yesterday afternoon my FAVORITE and much loved female Rhino Iguana named Wilma died. I'm not sure if an accident caused her demise or perhaps other problems. She was much loved here and Patty cried for some time. She was the multi-horn that was about the friendliest Rhino I've had. I'm having a necropsy done and then having her cremated and her ashes spread here on the farm she loved...RIP WILMA

I have 26 eggs getting ready to hatch she gave me this year and I'm going to keep 3-4 in memory of her..Thanks for listening...

Tom, I'm so sorry for your loss. Please let us know what the necropsy shows. I wish I had done a necropsy on Mayan. I'll always wonder what killed my beautiful and seemingly healthy boy.

So Sorry, Tom. About how old was she?
It's good to know she passed among those who loved her... everything dies; and that is the best way to go.

Tom I am so sorry for you and Patty's loss. It seems I have heard of a seemingly perfectly healthy and loved iguana passing unexpectedly all too often from others, and they never find out why. I am thankful you are getting an autopsy and hopefully it can shed some light on potential hidden illnesses that iguanas may be hiding and help us prevent them and future tragedies. I am glad for you that you have a clutch from Wilma so that her legacy can live on.
Rest in Peace Wilma... you will not be forgotten.

Tom and Patty,

Sorry to hear about Wilma's unexpected death. I am glad that she spent her latter years at your facility as I am sure you gave her a good home. I share in your loss, as Wilma was also my pet for many years.

Wilma - Oct 1998- Sept 2010

Wilma’s parents were Spica and Rocky. Spica is a notably tall horned female of Florida Key bloodlines. Rocky is a multihorned male of unknown (most likely wild caught) origin. The two were bred together 1 time only in 1998. Wilma was one of five unique offspring that had multihorns from a clutch of 11. Wilma lived in Southern California with her sibling Regulus and future mate Fred (of unrelated lines) for 4-1/2 years. Then the trio moved to Long Island, NY where they resided another 3 years before getting separated on account of a divorce. Wilma and Fred lived briefly in Casper, Wyoming before finally finding a more ideal home in South Florida. Wilma’s original name was Metropolis, her pictures have been internet posted many times over the years. She was one in five from the original first documented clutch of captive breed multihorned rhino iguanas.

Did Wilma live at the Riverhead Reptile Museam (now closed) on Long Island by any chance?

TOM_CRUTCHFIELD Sep 06, 2010 08:02 AM

Thank you and everyone for your kind words. She was truly a magnificent lizard that produced [after this year's hatch] 43 offspring here alone in the short time I had her here. This year she laid a record clutch [for me anyway] of 26 viable eggs of which all look like they will hatch soon. Patty and her had a special fondness and bond between them. We will really miss her...Thanks again..
