Who else here owns a Savu?

curaniel Sep 04, 2010 10:53 PM

I just haven't come across that many people who keep them and I'd love to swap stories! My girl is four years old, eats like a trash compactor, alternately burrows and climbs, and even all this time later is still nervous about being handled. I'd love to see some pictures!

Mine is a great handler. A yearling from Kim and Mark Bell. I love this little snake and I loathe the fact that photos do NOT do it justice with the depth of color. I have a friend coming over who is a good photog this october and I think I will see if he can get any good pics, but when I clean later today I'll get a few for you.

Yay! Thank you! Mine has certainly gotten calmer with age - as a juvie she would strike like a machine gun when you opened her tank, but it was all bluff; she's never bitten anyone.

I know better than to do something like this now, but I rescued her from a pet store that kept her at over 100 degrees with no hide. The staff was so ignorant and afraid that I had to bully them into getting her out for me. When she calmed right down in my hands, they looked at me like I'd performed some kind of miracle!

I'm looking to upgrade her tank, what do you keep yours in?

Here's a shot from a couple of weeks ago, freshly shed.

I'm glad to hear that you "rescued" her from those moron's at the pet store in 100 plus degree heat. Hope other snakes there aren't having to go through that exact same torturous scenario too.

Now if snakes had cuddly fluffy fur and big brown eyes the authorities would be on them in a heartbeat, but of course the general public could care less about torturing a reptile!

I reported them for abuse and neglect on three separate occasions. I don't think it did any good explaining to the ignorant what constitutes abuse for reptiles is a challenge. Finally I had to say that the rabbits were also living in squalor before I was taken seriously!

DMong Sep 06, 2010 11:49 AM

Yes, I totally agree with you about proving to the ignorant what would indeed constitute reptile abuse.

Good for you for at least making the strong effort to notify the so-called "authorities" about the situation in that lame pet store.

Now if only some of these moron's would ACT UPON IT!!!

Wow that savu's like almost black, nice... I don't know how old mine is but I think he's not 2 years old yet... Savu's r a lil too too small it seems --___-- but they're very unique.

Mine is in an old neodesha. I do want to move him into a rack soon, but just waiting on a little more growth. I picked him up this february at about maybe 8 inchs, so probably a bit below yearling. We had a bit of a rough start getting regular feeding going on him, but once he settled him, we were golden. Yours has MUCH more size on him.

Honestly neither do I. I think they are a great beginner snake as well. They are just fairly hard to find... We have so many stunning moderately priced snakes (I paid $40 for my savu) that I still dont understand why so few hit retail. Savus would do better in show or retail environment because their colors are so very subtle that they show up best in person.

Here is a cell phone shot of my lil guy.

Those eyes are what captivated me from the start. I agree that they're great for someone starting out. They're so easy to keep and their size is pet-perfect. Has anyone bred morphs?

KevinM Sep 06, 2010 06:57 PM

There are no morphs of Savu's that I am aware of. I think thats one reason they lost out in popularity. Other reasons could be the babies are nippy, and although they are beautiful snakes, they arent uber colorful like other species of python/morphs. Much like Macklot pythons, I think they were popular when not common, but lost popularity when they became more abundant and started losing value in the herp trade. Neat snakes though. Good luck with yours!!
