Ball Python loose in L.A.

Patrick562 Sep 05, 2010 12:43 AM

Fox 11 news states a normal adult (around five feet in length) Ball Python was found roaming in the Los Angeles area. Whether it was an escape or an abandonment is unknown. I sure hope we don't have an epidemic like the Everglades but with another species, or any species for that matter.

PLEASE DO NOT RELEASE YOUR PETS! TURN THEM OVER TO A SHELTER, PET STORE, OR A RESPONSIBLE OWNER!

I'm sure those of you on the forum can add more to this to stress it's importance!

So glad I don't live there, lol.

You are preaching to the choir here. Nobody who comes here to discuss their balls is out there releasing them into the wild.

I searched and could not find any articles about this. Please post the article. Would be nice to see a photo of the snake found to confirm it really is a ball python.

If the news can call a Bull Snake an Anaconda I would not put it past them to call a Cali King a Ball Python. Snakes can also miraculously increase in size when news reporters are present. They will look at a 3 foot snake and report it as a 10 foot snake. I would not trust their word on species or size w/out seeing a video or photo of the actual snake.

If it really was a ball python or any snake non native to L.A. then it's a shame someone was irresponsible enough to let it go loose either intentionally or through improper caging. Although there is always the possibility it was a publicity stunt by one of the many anti reptile groups out there and not an irresponsible pet owner.

I do not believe it would be possible for one loose snake to start an epidemic. Ball Pythons could not survive long enough in any US state to start up a breeding group like the Burms did in the Everglades. That is a very isolated incident and I'm very surprised you even made a correlation between what's happening there and one loose snake in LA. It's that kind of thinking that we are having to constantly defend ourselves against.

It was a Ball python. The news report i saw was prefaced by " firemen called to catch a giant snake loose in Los Angeles". It was about three and a half foot long and the fireman just used a stick to push it into a bucket.

I wasn't at home to watch the news report, but I did see the commercial for the topic on the news....I was so upset. The media are such (insert your favorite term here). It was an adult ball python. It's ridiculous that it even made the news. How it came to be loose in public is one thing, but to use a loose pet snake for scaring the population and hype is just plain irresponsible and it boils my blood. Especially when we are trying to fight for the rights to keep and transport our animals on a Federal level.

It looks to be in a freedom breeder, and I don't understand why you would have a freedom breeder (or equivalent) for one little baby snake. That picture looks very familiar too. Something very fishy about this. Oh and I wanted to say. Oooohhhh you just got served boy lol...I couldn't have said it any better myself SyltherLyn lol.

it must have had a hard time crawling through all the syringes and crack pipes, i wonder if it had a hard time crawling over all the garbage and homeless guys.

I was leaning more towards saving animals here people. Excuse me for having a poke at the Everglades! It's obvious that one loose snake isn't going to turn into a scene from Anaconda. And yes, it is a real photo of my snake. Before it got to me from BHB Enterprises. Why is that even relevant?

So, let me get this straight, you thought you'd come here and tell us not to release our snakes in order to "save snakes"?

Don't you realize that implies you think people reading your post are out there releasing snakes or housing them improperly so that they can escape?

So you are basically insulting all of us here, by implying we are the ones doing that.

You are not saving any snakes by coming here telling us not to release our snakes. None of us here are releasing any snakes.

My first post was not that negative about you other than being surprised anyone owning a ball python would publicly link Ball Pythons with the Everglades issue which is the exact mentality we've been fighting so hard against. As a Ball Python owner you should have known better than that.

My initial negativity was mainly aimed at the media who are notorious for reporting wrong species and wrong size to boost ratings and add sensationalism to their stories. I still haven't been able to find any link to the report. Post a link please.

Apparently it wasn't important enough for them to put on their website because I've been searching for the link as well, you'll just have to take out word for it. As far as saving animals goes, experienced Ball Python owners aren't the only people who browse these forums. NOBODY knows who MIGHT HAVE read this and decided not to let their snake go (or any pet for that matter.) That's all I've got to say.

4 months ago this guy at work offered me a corn snake.
Not my kinda thing, but I said yes, next week he failed to bring it.
The other day he asks me again "do you want a ball python my friend does not want?"
I go sure, what ever happened to that corn snake.
"oh, I let it go on Toronto island, there are a lot of snakes there"
BAHHH WTF I yelled at him soo hard.
Soooo annoying, what irresponsible bull crap!
