Male blizzard is very dark........bad???

RedQuake Sep 25, 2003 09:44 AM

His temps are good, between 88-90 degrees and last night he ate 6 mealworms, but he's very very dark, almost completely brown. He shed the other day too. Should i be concerned? My female isn't like that at all.

I've taken pics of all but Zoe (she's hiding and won't come out) so i'm going to finish off the film with pics of their setups and take it in.

Thankyou

Probably not a problem. My blizzards did that from time to time. Probably just a mood, but keep an eye out for the other signs: weight, feces, regurg et al.

This is one reason I don't get into the midnight thing. Sure some are dark a lot of the time, but......

So far so good, no vomitting, his feces looks normal and he's maintaining his weight (i haven't noticed any change in the thickness of his tail).

Thankyou, i will keep a very close eye on him.

He spends a ton of time in his humid hide, which has a thick layer of papertowels in it. The thermometer on the tiles reads 88-90 but i'm not sure if the temp inside the hide is that warm, so i've set up a night lite above it to increase the ambient temp. If it is a temp problem hopefully this will clear it up. Once he is out of the hide i'll take a few layers of papertowels out of the it.

Hi,

I would love to use moss, it would look better than paper towels its just that Bronx is still very tiny and loves crickets. They have escaped his bowl before and i'm concerned he might follow one into the moss and get a mouth full of it.

I would like to start using moss for the larger geckos, do you know of a good brand i could pick up at Petsmart? They carry 90% of the products on their site up here (Canada) so hopefully anything you suggest i should be able to find.

Thanks

I don't usually shop at petsmart, I used to pick it up in small bags at Animal Connection in SF, but more recently found it in larger bags (better value, and better size for the amount of geckos I keep) at Home Depot in the garden section, it's Hawatha Green Moss "Collected from the Pacific Northwest Rain Forest".

I have had no problems with the stuff, even with hatchlings.

Thats great. I'll be going there soon to pick up the wood for my new unit. I never thought of going there

Ummmmmm i'm still a long ways off breeding and all but does home depot also carry the stuff to incubate eggs in? Perlite right? I've only been able to find it mixed in with dirt for gardening, never on its own.

Thankyou again

Yes, I found the perlite and sphagnum peat moss on the same shelf at Home Depot. It's really cheap, less than $3 for a huge bag. My leos always chose the moss over the paper towels. While you're there, you can also pick up a spray bottle for less than a buck.

Yes, I use perlite. I go by Albey's method. My eggs are at 5 and 3 weeks now, still waitin' to hatch.

Thankyou, now i can't wait to get my pay and go to home depot. I just spotted a house i would LOVE to buy......if i had the money i'd spend most of it at Home Depot. I love renovating and building stuff hehehe.

I'm confused though........as normal lol you use vermiculite to incubate while others use perlite. whats the difference and will it have any affects on the eggs?
I should know this by now....Being sick really does fuzz up my mind

Most people I know use vermiculite. Works great. Can't comment on the perlite, haven't used it
