Sunglow Motley???

actechwjw Sep 06, 2010 06:56 PM

This is my male corn snake. Need to know if he is a Sunglow Motley or at least Amelanistic Motley. Want to pair him with a female to get the babies to look like him. I was thinking a Female Sunglow Stripe then the babies would be 1/1 Sunglow Motley, Het Stripe. Just need to make sure he is at least Amelanistic. Tell me what you think. Thanks.

Looks like a normal motley based on his eye color. Amel mots would have red eyes like a normal patterned amel. It looks motley though. The tell tale would be a plain belly. If you bred him with an amel stripe, all the babies would be striped/motley.

Forgot to tell you his belly is solid white.

Yeah, that is a normal motley. A "sunglow" is simply a line-bred amelanistic morph that sometimes(but not necessarily)has the hypo trait as well.

Only if that snake is heterozygous(a recessive gene carrier) for sunglow amel(albino)will you get any amel motleys from breeding it to a sunglow motley.

Definitely a nice normal phenotype motley though!

Thought he was Amel because he has no black markings. Do All normal motleys look like him, orange & yellow with no black? I've seen motleys with black markings & different colors.
Just want his babies to have his same colors. If I get a Female Amel Stripe then the babies would be Motley/Stripe, his color with some cool dots & broken stripe markings and no black markings right??

ALL motleys and striped corns will have the plain white belly. All motleys and striped animals I have seen pretty much have no black either. Its almost as if the motley and striped genes have a hypo gene component to them. Motleys can run from nice connected borders with just a circle of background color between them (like yours exhibits), to hardley noticeable except for the white belly. Stripes run from noticeably striped to almost vanishing striped pattern. Still, clean belly with no dark or black checkers. If you bred that male to a striped female, you will get a combo of motley and striped animals. Some will look more motley than striped, and vice versa. Doubtful you will get really good mots or really good stripes, more like a combo to one extent or the other. Still, cool patterned for sure and all will have plain bellies!!

Ok, so to get the cool Motley/Stripe pattern with the colors of my male The female needs to be a Normal Stripe or an Amel Stripe will get me the same result because the Amel is ressive.
Sory so many questions but the reptile show is coming next month and just want to make sure to get the right female to get the pattern and color I'm looking for in the babies.
Reason I'm looking at the Amel Stripe is for future breeding ventures.
Thanks

Yes, if your animal is NOT also heterozygous for the amel trait, when you breed it to either a normal motley/stripe, or an amel motley/stripe, you will ONLY get normal looking motley offspring resembling the one you have there. If it is bred to an amel(albino) motley/stripe, then they will ALL BE normally colored like yours and be 100% heterozygous for amel.

Now if either snake happens to be het for stuff we don't know about(which is always possible now days), you could still get some unexpected surprises.

Your snake does indeed display flecks of dark pigment on it's dorsal pattern, and it's eyes are also dark black, so it is without a doubt normally colored. The motley/stripe gene automatically reduces the normal amount of dark pigment the animal displays, but it still has some.

Sweet!! Thanks for all your help guys. Now I know what to look for in a female at the reptile show.
In Memphis,TN The only pet stores we have now is Petsmart & Petco, they put all the really cool pet stores out of business around here, so if your looking for a specific snake you have to wait for the Repticon show. At least we have a show here now, they did not start coming here till last year.
