Very interesting, John. I'd be interested to see if it "speckles up" as it grows like most holbrooki.

Nearly all the juvenile Holbrooki I've seen have the thin crossbars on their dorsum and speckle out.

It seems the Amels and Lavenders keep these crossbars into adulthood though.....

Thanks........ I like capturing them with their tongues out.........

Plus......have you noticed holbrooki are WAY more nippier than splendida.......and smaller out of the egg.......

And they don't grow as quickly as floridana either. I have been pumping one of my two females cause she has the best chance of being able to mate this next spring and there's no comparison to the Brooks.

i know lol. I was comparing them to Floridana. I only ever had one clutch of Splendida and it was crossed with Cal king.

The only reason I even brought this up was because I once thought splendida and holbrooki were pattern variations of a single subspecies........ Now after hatching a number of clutches from each I can see many differences......not to mention different habitats....... Splendida are found in more arid areas...... Holbrooki are nearly always found close to water......

I think holbrooki are not as robust as splendida in general. They appear to have more distinct head and neck regions as opposed to splendida that remind me more of eastern kings with thicker necks and less head/neck differentiation. Specks are more like cal kings with that respect IMO. Also, I have had specks for several years that would be considered well into adulthood by any measure based on the time they were in my collection. This was WAY before my breeding days, etc. The point is, one specimen which was probably female didnt really exceed thirty inches or so in length the entire four to five years I had her in my collection. It was about 1.5 times the diameter of a quarter in girth too!!! Not a very big snake at all. Then, the other extreme appears to be the huge four plus foot males you can find from time to time!!

Spendidas seem to almost be the link between Californias and Speckleds and really they are. I love the transition of the getulas from Cali to Desert to Specks then Chains and florida. Oh and the Nigra and Nigritus in the mix also.
