What is this little guy/gal? ID please

Jonathan_Brady Sep 08, 2010 12:20 AM

I was walking my dog and saw this little snake squirming across the road. I promptly captured it and brought it home to take some pics. It was about 5 inches long or so and a beautiful red/orange color (which I was not able to capture very well - my pics make it look more brown, which it wasn't). I have NO IDEA what it is and was hoping someone might be able to ID it to help satisfy my curiosity.

The pictures aren't the greatest because it wouldn't sit still.

My first thought when doing some quick research was an "Everglades Rat Snake". Then I read that they don't come up as far north as Orlando and also that their babies are 8-9 inches. So that would certainly exclude this little one.

Any ideas?

Thanks!!!

I am thinking a Pine Woods Snake (Rhadinaea flavilata). That seems to be what it looks like. Nice find.

Thanks Dan! Based on the quick searches I did, you're right!

Very cool, VERY little snake

Here's another I found on a different night. I didn't try to capture this one and bring it home (wish I would have), I just ran home with the hopes of it being in the same spot when I got back, and I grabbed my camera and a snake hook.

I've done my best to figure out what this one is, and can't. Any ideas?

Also, here is a toad and a frog from that night.

Squirrel treefrog

Thanks!

DanW is correct - that's a Pine Woods Snake.
They only grow to be about a foot long.

Thanks Tim!

My fiancee found the info about their adult length absolutely fascinating. I only work with boas, and as you probably know, they're born 18 inches long!

Like the other's said, it is indeed a Pine Woods Snake.

I have captured a few of those here in central Florida. Very mellow little dude's, but don't make good captives if you aren't fairly well-seasoned with their husbandry.

Thanks Doug!

The thought crossed my mind to keep it, but then I remembered that I have NOTHING to feed it and don't intend to try and capture teeny tiny anoles that run about 900 miles per hour! lol So I took it back where I found it and let it go in the grass, instead of on the pavement

Yes, that was probably the very best thing to do.
