The painting is very good but there is some 'constructive criticism' I will like to give. This isn't to put you down or anything, but just point out areas that you can watch for to improve your already great skill.

First off, the rendering and overall composition is fantastic. I like how the background mirrors the expression and 'emotion' of the man. Your flesh tones are very realistic and must have taken a great deal of effort to get right (I always had a hard time with flesh tones when I was painting (though most of my painting has been 25mm scale fantasy/sci-fi miniatures used for tabletop battles and display.).

However the face symmetry is off. You can especially see it in the chin (the little 'dimple' in the middle of the chin...is way out of line with the center line of the face and the chin thus looks like its been pushed too far to the left). Also, the right ear is not long enough which further gives the face a strong 'out of balance' look.

Everything else with the painting is great, head size balances shoulder width nicely and the muscle structure looks great...Just have to watch the facial balance for future works. Though it is true that not everybody has a 'perfect' face, there is a bit too much away from the center line to make the face look 'right'.

The drawing, being an abstract or kind of surreal to start off, it just gives an rather interesting play of limbs...which makes it great to look at. I really do like the drawing.

Thank you,

His face really is very much as portrayed; as a matter of fact he does not like any representation of himself for that reason. Ironically it is the reason I like his face, allot of character. Having said that, his face is not symmetrical yet probably if measured more so than I portrayed him as. When ever critiquing a portrait it helps to look at the model and the artwork to fully grasp the actual likeness etc. I appreciate your comments and I am glad you like the drawing.

Glad you took my comments as helpful and not just critical...so many people don't take constructive criticism well, even when its not meant to be hurtful or destructive, but to help improve.

As I don't know the person you used as a model (be it a real person sitting for the portrait, or if you did the work from a photo), its hard to say if what I think is a 'cleft chin' is in fact not a scar or something else. However definitely alot of character and interest in the face...and for all I know, if you did use a live model (and didn't just come up with the face from your imagination) he may have an old injury that knocked things 'off center' etc. Either way, there is alot of interests in this picture...I wish I had that much skill in drawing. I used to be pretty good but long years of not really doing much drawing or painting has left me rather rusty. That and I am too lazy to spend the extra time needed to get things right...when in the past, I was able to get things drawn alot faster. (or maybe I am far more self critical now than I was 20 years ago)

Btw, another portrait of another friend of mine, he had a very badly broken nose from years ago that was not fixed. It is extremely curved, so much so that when I painted his portrait I corrected his nose, I felt that no one would think his nose was actually that curved, although it is. Fortunately he and his family like it corrected and love the portrait.

The other portrait, I did not correct anything hence his scared chin etc. but I felt the image was so strong it stood on its own merit. His wife loves the painting. I have known him for twenty years, his face is very powerful and interesting, much character, "perfect imperfections"
