Cool little guys.......
Why is it that all the amels and lavenders I've seen don't speckle out like a normal?

Even amel cal kings have a cleaner pattern than normals......

my guess is the amel mutation effects the ontogenic change of course ive always thought the amel specks were created from the amel splendies so... who knows, i certainly dont care. holbrooki and splendida and nigra are all the same snake imho

You may be on to something actually........the amel mutation could effect the yellow speckling ontogenesis.........

Btw....you forgot to ad nigrita to your list........I believe mbks are merely melanistic splendida.......

John, the other thing I find strange is that it will affect the ontonogenic change in some species/subspecies, but not others. This appears prevelent with Elaphe obsoleta for sure. Amel black and yellow rats retain juvie patterns, with the amel blacks not diffusing out like the normals would, and amel yellows not loosing the blotches and then striping out like normals. However, then you have something like the chocholate emoryi that still diffuse in coloration as they age even if amelanistic. You would think black rats that diffuse out like chocholate emoryi would exhibit that when amelanistic as well. Hmmm.... Could be due to differing strains of amelanism that affect the ontonogenic process differently? I wonder if a creamsickle corn derived from a chocholate emoryi and amel corn would diffuse out the same as a pure amel choc emoryi?
