ozarkrider Sep 25, 2003 10:53 AM

I was just wondering, I have seen many small racers that were all blue and they were never over 1 1/2 feet, but and always called them blue racers. but i have never found a big one like that but i have found racers from 4 feet to six foot and they are black on their back and half way down the the side with the rest blue and the botton blue Are these big snakes blue or black racers.

Black racer can have blue sides and bottom. But in some location blue racers are more blackish with blue. I would have to know the location you see these in to make an accurate judgement. THANKS, WILLIAM H. AND THE GREEN PINE MUSEUM.

Welcome to the world of COMMON NAMES. The biggest problems in ID come from the fact that such names are used locally to describe a snake and then in the next county or state BINGO! In Florida for example, I have had racers and Indigos described to me as Blue Racers. That is why locality is so important when asking for a snake's ID.

I too am in KY and see these guys just about all summer long. They do have a bluish color on the sides just where the side color meets the underbelly.

Here is a web page you may find usefull and fun to surf.

What part of KY are you from? Im from Elizabethtown.

Did you know there is a reptile show tomorrow in Shelbyville?
Always pretty good selection of herps.
I go monthly to stock up on mice and to see what is out there.

Happy herping
