Cages and Shelves

CrocKing Sep 08, 2010 11:59 PM

Im about to have a baby so have to move some stuff around to make room for the babies room. Im not to up on the cages and shelves that can be used for herps having never used them myself since I just have used sweater boxes, tubs and aquariums for my collection. I was wondering though what are the most cheapest stackable cages that you can buy that are good for your money? Also are there any shelves that anyone knows of that hold aquariums well that you can buy at a place like home depot. Thanks.

Start with the classifieds - you'll see Repti-Racks and possibly Dragons 4 You, among others. These two have many lizard-sized cages. Price is right. Shipping cost is a factor for any cage.

You could purchase some shelves from DIY stores and still use your tubs. $100 will get you a large utility rack that will hold quite a few tubs. Tanks are tougher because you need access from above, and that means alot of height between shelves.

Thanks. Kind of wanted to stick with aquariums cause I like doing natural vivs. Only a few tubs for hatchlings, etc. KNow what shelves others use? thanks.

You don't need an aquarium to do a natural viv, in fact its far easier to maintain a viv with a front door vs top lid.

Tanks and adjustable Book Shelves
Those are adjustable shelving units (book cases) I ordered from a store called Wood Works. I ordered them at 14 in. deep instead of the normal 12 ". They cost about 120.00 each. One was a 3 ft. and one was 5 ft. tall, By 3 ft. wide. I built a hidden compartment In the upper right hand unit, from extra shelving boards. Very simple just an extra 6" shelf and I used Magnetic cabinet latches to hold the door on( removable door ). I drilled 1-1/4 holes (easy to push plugs through ) from one cabinet to another, at shelf elevation (in hidden compartment) and also vertical In the Corners of the shelves to run wiring. each tank has a bottom Heater and light. I used three 6 way power outlets in the units, One for the lights, One for the heaters, and one in the hidden compartment for light timers for the heaters. I can turn on all 6 lights at once with the power strip switch located on one side of a tank. My heaters work off one light timer switch which is in the hidden compartment along with any extra cords.

I bought these about 15 years ago so the price is higher at todays date, but if you can find a furniture store that will order different hights of book cases, they should be able to order deeper book cases for not much more of a cost. At the time I ordered mine it was only about 45.00 difference for the both. I only have about 5-6 inch opening over most of the tanks which is plenty of room for me.
Good Luck, Bob

PS.
The shelfs had about 1/8 inch of space between the shelf face and the inside frame face. I had 1/8 " plexie glass cut with finger hole drill in it. I could slide it in on one side, then back half way to catch the other side of the shelf unit. so it was KID PROOF. Worked real well when the little one started crawling around.

Great set ups and great looking snakes.

Your grey bandeds are awesome.

I looked into them but didn't want tricky eaters that might go off food for a long time.

I've heard stories on getting them to start feeding as new hatchlings, but never once they start eating. They are real cool and mellow snakes. Never have a problem of them going off feed that isn't out of the ordinary.

Those are nice. Found some quick and easy one that am gonna try and see how they do. Was thinking about those industralized plastic ones that you see at walmart and home depot but didnt they would provide enough space between shelves for lamps, etc. Thanks.

I bought a 6' tall Rubbermaid storage shelf from Big Lots for about $40. It hold 20L perfectly, unless you need a heating lamp. I use small fluorescent lights mounted with zip ties to the underside of the shelf above the cage, and UTHs for heat.

when I was looking into them which was only 2 yrs ago read horror stories and though I live in lizard country (Miami) I wont feed lizards,

However yes many have no problems with them . I just didn't want to risk it as so used to easy eaters .

I still might get a female as find them fantastic looking.

Thanks
