Funny you should notice, my "in hand" pics are well known now and my ring has led to a few confrontations with people using MY pics to sell THEIR snakes.
I just find that for me, a snake in the hand is easier to photograph than one on the ground. I don't have much luck with adult snakes but for small ones I do pretty well.

Cool snake, Tom. Patternless Pines have a really cool look to them. Love those cloudy overcast skies behind you as well. Those usually are the precursor for a decent day out in the field.
