Do you name your snakes?

johnthebaptist Sep 09, 2010 11:32 AM

This is kind of silly. I know most people name their pets. My dogs have names. i have 6 snakes and a gecko and i havent named named any of them in the 5 years ive been in this hobby. Is that strange? I refer to my snakes as 'pueblan' or 'anery corn' ect.

I do but they dont really stick that well.Except for my boa her name works. My jungle python we've had for about 3 weeks now and still havent name it, although Ive ran through a few names.
I have a cat that Ive had for 5 yrs and the only name that ever stuck was OrangeCat.Not very creative but it works.

Dogs seem easier to name for some reason.

Back when I had many snakes and bred them, I scoffed at naming them. Why? Snakes don't respond to names. Plus, back then I was getting new ones and trading and such, so giving a snake a name that might be sold or traded was not in my mind.

But now with far fewer and more permanent snakes (and having children in the house who do not quite understand having a pet without a name), naming them is part of the fun of having them.

Plus who cares anyway.

All my pet snakes have names. Any critter I plan on keeping for life gets a name. My BP is Nicodemus. My kings are Dora, Queen, Ace, Pearl, and Jack(RIP). My corns are Bizzar, Elixir, and Hera(RIP). And my Nelson's milk is going to be either Oden or Opal depending on gender determination. I reciently got a pet toad who is Jaba.

No, I do not because to me my snakes are not "pets" in the same sense that dogs or cats are to most people.

I name most of my animals. Many of my fish even have names. It just depends on if they have enough overt personality to trigger something. Some take longer to name and some I know the second I see them.
Fish....Imotep...Fahaka Puffer..TONS of personality and named since as a 3inch baby he filleted any other living thing in the tank. He lives alone.
Psychadelic Mandarin....Batman...aka Bruce Wayne...he moves up the walls.
Ick and Burp- my sons first marine fish...a pr of Ocellaris clownfish...he was 10yrs old at the time. Ick and Burp are nearly 8!

Reptiles..
TealC- black SST

Adelaide and Darwin- pr. of Children's and their daughter Betty June...so named from the movie Shattered, even if she isn't a BC

Maleki- Indigo

McQueen- escape artist hypo everglades ratsnake

Sickle- Harry potter named everglades ratsnake

Torque- albino yellow ratsnake...rather high strung though not as bad as the greens

Witch- greenish ratsnake

Iryx- Mexican milksnake

Pyxie- hypo BC

loads of them are not named though. Gotta admit.

Ya I've been naming mine that have something to do with their pattern. An their my pets so want them to have names.

"Safari"...7 1/2 foot Jungle Carpet Python.
"Zorro" ...Tangerine Honduran Milk
"Spot"...vanising pattern Sinaloan Milk
"Sunny" .. butter motley corn
"Zee"...normal corn with zig zag pattern
"Janome"...ghost corn
"Brownie"...Trans pecos rat (not sure I like his name though)
"Diamond" ...amel corn. Got that name from the diamond pattern
on his head when he was a baby. Its gone now so not
really crazy about keeping that name.

Yes. I love my snakes as much as I love my cats. The names are for me, not for them. In most cultures names have power; I imagine that I wouldn't give as much regard to a nameless animal, because of the implication that it would be unimportant or disposable.

"I imagine that I wouldn't give as much regard to a nameless animal, because of the implication that it would be unimportant or disposable."

an excellent point. i've had named and nameless reptile pets over the years. while i hope that i have treated them ALL with the respect and attention that they deserve, i know that i definitely cared more for the named critters. if it came down to it, i would probably do more and try harder to maintain my animals with names than those without.

I name my personal animals most of the time. I particularly name things that are going to be used in education. My rescue animals are mostly numbered unless they came with a name. When I am lacking a name and need one for some reason, fluffy, spot and rover are used.

Some of mine have names, some don't (see my sig below). Most of the names are in the ancient languages of the regions where they came from (Quechua, Creek Indian, and so on), and several of the names mean "snake" or "snake-like" in those languages. I'm easily amused.

Yes my husband and I named our snakes. We have a male red tail named Anubis, a female red tail named Isis, a caramel t-positive motley named Heket, and a Het male motley named horus. We plan to breed them but they are still memebers of our family.
