Genetics at its finest!

JoshMolone Sep 09, 2010 06:36 PM

Im probably the only one who finds this interesting, but I love seeing Color/Patterns that come out from breeding Certain Rats to Others, ect.
After seeing this girls offspring I am assuming that the pair is 0 Het "Caramel Rat". Rat Genetics.. Makes me laugh. (Im sorry for the crummy pics, I just wanted to get the idea across.)
Here the mom.

The dad.

And a couple of the offspring.

The majority of my rats are that color. I've always just called them "beige". I've had a few random hoodeds pop up that I held back for breeding.

This is a little bit aside from the post, but amazing drawings.
Just saw the post.
How long do you spend on those?
They are incredible!
You've got a talent, my friend!

Thanks alot,
It varies from piece to piece, and I usually work a few hours a day and don't keep very good track of time. something like the tiger salamanders takes maybe 2-3 hours, the ball python took somewhere between 12-15 hours.

My husband and I are selectively holding back and looking for "Dutch" mice for our colony too. They kind of look like black white-faced cattle (As a farm boy, this is probably their appeal to him). I've also been looking for hairless and siamese mice to add to my stock just for fun Glad to see someone else enjoys the finer aspects of feeder breeding too.

NEVER ADD hairless/shar pei mice to a colony....
trust me....
they ahve NO TEATS....think what it does...
and trust me...been there done that...

keep them seperate....as with the siamese....they siamese runs out quickly...you will lose it in a generation or two...you have to keep some pure...mine have been lost for awhile now and I added it 3 times at least....seal points and blue points and English both...really good ones...Oh and long haired poodle ones too.....all gone....

....I call the rats that color beige or blondes also....

....hard to find GOOD mice....look up mouse clubs and never mention the word snake....trust me...

I call mine tan hooded. I love selective feeder breeding. I am in the process of working on a blue hooded dumbo. If I remember I will try to post pics, but i am still a few generations out. Should be cool.
