John, as usual those Knobs are my favorites, but sometimes I have to switch it up. Great looking snakes you have there! Still no mate for that adult Knob?

Thanks Jimmy....
That adult male was hatched by Ric Blair in 1998.......he has never been bred......I swore I would buy him an adult female while I was down in Daytona but all I found was a sub adult pair and an adult male........

So....I am still looking for an adult female for him......

In 2012 I should produce some from the candy cane line pair I have......If I have to raise up a female for him he will be 16 years old or so........But I am sure he could still do the trick.......I should have bought a hatchling in 08 or 09.....

How big is he now? I have a 2002 male that is about as big around as a half dollar and almost 50 inches long. I even thinned down his feeding schedule to one adult mouse every 10 or so days. I also have a 2002 female that he has bred for me this year, but I'm afraid to put him with any of my other females because he is like 3x their size. Whats your thoughts on this?

He is well over 4 feet and has great weight....... I actually almost acquired a sub adult female early last year but thought the same as you do...... He would be too huge for her..... Hindsight is 20 20 but I should have gotten her..... I'm sure by next year she would have been good to go.......

I'm sure folks have gotten huge males and small females to breed successfully but I have yet to try it.......

Gorgeous mtn. kings. I too am a sucker for Z's and Pyros. The pyro with the high black X-overs is a screamer. What ssp of Z is that?

zonatahunt Sep 10, 2010 04:13 AM

I'm betting that those are Santa Barbara locality coast mountain kings. Also, I'd imagine that the individual with all the crossovers is a male. For some reason males from that locality of z's always have way more crossovers on them than do the females. You gotta love how deep the red is on those southern coast locales...but then again I could be completely wrong on my guess!

You are correct Mitch....Santa Barbara multifasciata and the male is the one with the more black crossovers.....

They all just shed and the red IS awesome on them....

I forgot to comment on how red the Z's are! I've only had the pleasure of seeing a SC county coastal and it was indeed gorgeous with tons of triads, but was a washed out orange (not that I am complaining).
Still got fingers crossed to see a San Mateo...hopefully next season

zonatahunt Sep 10, 2010 12:26 PM

It sounds like you live up here on the Peninsula. I know that you want to find San Mateo animals, but the Santa Cruz localities are SO much easier to find. There's more habitat farther south and the animals tend to have more triads and a ton of speckling on the snout. Either way, good luck to wherever you choose to hunt!

Mitch

Zach_MexMilk Sep 10, 2010 02:35 PM

Hi Mitch,
Yeah, I actually live in San Francisco. I have been doing my Z homework and have some spots I think might be suitable habitat for some Coast snakes. Haha, everyone tells me SC county should be easy, and I have a few areas in mind, but it is a tad further for me then some areas in San Mateo county. Plus, I love finding all the different variants of the Coast garter in San Mateo, so its all around fun!

A baby picture of Zunchara:

I love pyros. It is physically gratifying to behold their beauty. True eye candy!
Those heavily black crossover pyros you have are beautiful, exactly what I like!

LOL! That damn Z is way too active...won't hold still!

pyromaniac Sep 11, 2010 09:17 AM

Well, the photos are not perfect( I should talk! LOL!) but the Multicincta is perfect! Great closeup of a snake I hope to find someday while herping in my neck of the woods.

Zach_MexMilk Sep 11, 2010 08:02 PM

LOL, yea, those for sure were no where near perfect! Once the Z is out of his enclosure, he just wants to cruise all around. Funny enough, only place he is remotely sedentary is on the couch...
He is quite the looker haha.

Zach_MexMilk Sep 11, 2010 08:03 PM

Yeah, haha, the pics are far from perfect! He doesn't like to stay still unless he is in his enclosure or, funny enough, on the couch.
Where are you located?

pyromaniac Sep 11, 2010 08:53 PM

Calaveras County 3200 ft elevation.
I know folks who have found multicintas in El Dorado County just north of me, and to the south in Yosemite. My friend was hiking at Half Dome last summer and he saw a zonata on the path but he was afraid to pick it up (not a herper) and when I heard about that I was really sorry (ARGH!!!) I had not been with him!

Sounds like you are in the right area! Funny enough, similar story on my part. Aunt, Uncle, and cousins went to Yosemite a few months back and took pictures of a snake crossing the path. Turned out it was a large multicincta...man was I bummed not to be there!

Good luck herping! My buddy's dad has property up in the Sierras that is LITTERED with boards, etc so I got my fingers crossed for next season.
