Not all fun....

Lost a litter tonight.

Betty was due 09/26 and for whatever reason, she dropped them tonight two weeks early. Had heard baby heartbeats this weekend. I found four babies with large yolks, too large to be viable and a number of slugs.

Sucks but mom seems to be OK.

I'm so sorry to hear about your lost litter. Let's hope that's the only one you have this year!

I'm sorry Dave, that's always tough... I can't remember, but did she have any trouble, or a small litter last year too?

Thanks Paul, yeah she's not done well for me for the last several years. Even Wilma has not been doing well. Maybe time to retire them??

Maybe it would do them some good to take a year off.

Maybe and maybe better to just move them on, I have a lot of animals coming to breeding age in the next couple of years....

You could put her out to pasture, or always sell her as a pet.

Pet would be the route I'd go. With full disclosure of her history that I know.

Yes, the babies that made it were great but there were more slugs than babies.

Sorry to hear this Dave, sadly it is all apart of breeding & as you say not all outcomes are good but atleast mum is ok.

Out of interest as you say she's not been doing well for you, how often are your females bred & how much rest are they given?

I am asking this as although i have bred BRB's & had 4 litters now, it is still relatively new to me, i have been doing 1 year breeding, 1 year rest.

Also what type of heart doppler do you use & do you have a link so i can possibly find the same model in the UK as i would like to have one handy?

Appreciate any help

This female has not been given a year off so likely it's at least partially my fault. Needless to say I will not be breeding her next year. She came to me as an adult without a known age so I'm not sure how old she is, I have her as 2000?? so from what I know I believe her to be at least 10 years old.

I have a Sonitrax 2MHZ with waterproof probe. I doubt you'd find the same thing still, the technology is always improving. IMO the waterproof probe is important along with a built in speaker although I've never tried ear buds with mine, it does have a jack. Hmmmm, have to try that.
