New Water and UVA

texasboa71 Sep 10, 2010 01:08 PM

well, i got my salvator water monitor in just a couple hours ago and put him/her in their new home. He is showing his shyness but looks like he made it through the shipping part ok. Have a question though. I had actually bought my 4 foot lizard lounge for a rhino iguana that i was going to buy when they hatched but couldn't wait any longer. I had read that iguanas need both uva and uvb light so i had both lights waiting for my iguana. Well, i haven't read anywhere that monitors really need the uva light. So does anyone know if monitors HAVE TO have uva because my basking spot is barely reaching 90 so I will need to get a bigger light and instead of using the uva light just move my present basking light over to cool area where it will be perfect for the monitor.

Monitors do not need uva. however it cant hurt. Get your basking temps up immediately!

well when i got back from buying bigger lamp, temp went up to 95. That is with a 100w. I bought a 160w bulb and will see what it does with that. If have to i will need to build some higher basking spots. My lizard lounge is probably too tall for monitors. We will see. I bought a 160w bulb that had both uva and uvb just in case but yeah, like you said they probably dont need the uva

Try flood spot lamps. A 50w is more than enough. I just installed one.

Hi

Stop thinking about what size the bulbs are. The mindset normally is a larger bulb is a hotter spot; this is correct but causes other problems.

Try using a small bulb (low wattage) and putting the basking site near the bulb or the bulb near the basking site.

I don't know what your setup looks like, but don't be afraid to put the bulb in the enclosure, that is what works best. Screen tops = nono.

Cheers,
Mike.

i made a 3/8 plywood top and cut holes out for lamp. The bulb i just bought put it well over 110 so i'm guessing 115 for basking spot. he actually hasn't climbed on his basking log yet. He has spent most of his time in the water. Now that its night time though he is under a log on the cooler side which is still probably 85 . I had the new bulb on for about an hour so it might even get hotter. We will see tomorrow. Oh and also, i never read any thing about how long to leave the daylight on. Right now i'm just going by texas daylight hours. Maybe 12-13 hours of daylight? I keep him in my little office which i just shut the vent off for the ac so it is actually a little warmer in here now.
