Cheri.measurements and a confession =o

reiko Sep 25, 2003 11:39 AM

Here are Carricks measurements if they help you any.

His daddy is pure german giant, and his mother a gold phase dragon.

here are his measurements as of this morning after his bathroom break

538 grams
18 1/8 inches
girth - 9inches
girth of tail base - 4 1/8 inches
head from nose to base of head - 2 3/4 inches
girth of head (around the thickest part)- 6 3/4 inches

i took all the measurements i could think of.. hehe.. probably some that are of no use at all but thought i might as well measure everything while i was there..

i also have a confession to make.. sigh.. here goes.. we have known for a long while that carrick, my boy.. is actually .. a girl.. ok there i admitted it. he was sold to me as a male, always thought of him as a male, i never even thought about it as i wasnt thinking of breeding. then a few months back i thought, well wonder if carrick maybe could father some babies for someone, that would be great, so of course i thought, well better check his sex, and then double check again, and again and no matter how hard i tried, there were no buldges, although i think i imagined they were there at times. i know i know, no big deal, but to me its like thinking your kid is a boy for over a year to just find they are a girl, i just never thought to really look until a few months ago i suppose, i think i peeked before and thought, hrmm... he doesnt show real well. i had seen other males that didnt have very obvious bulges, thought maybe that was it, but its not, he doesnt have any at all. anyhow.. so carrick is a she, but feel free to refer to carrick as he still.. we do good name we chose i guess, Carrick - dweller on the rocky cape, at least its good for either so im a big idiot....
heres a bunch of pictures of Carrick Bug

Rea she is still beautiful!!! HAHAHA I had to laugh at all the times I imagined how my Candy and your carricks babies would turn out, lol. Now I get to imagine Foster and Carricks babies Either way whatever Carrick is lol he/she has to be one of the nicest looking dragons I've seen. Gees that must be weird for you. I couldn't imagine if Foster turned out to be a female, lol.

i have known for awhile now, but i was in denial, not that i love him any less, its just that its strange. we still call carrick a he around here, i dont think Carrick minds
i checked his sex when he was much younger, and again at 6 months and i didnt really think much of it, but then when i was thinking about him fathering some babies it occured to me to check again and really look this time, and well, "they" just werent there.. lol.. o well.. still love our Bug

We ALL know Buffy is female... especially since I have been plastering the board with pictures of her hatchlings LOL

Well, she was sold to me as a young female. At 16 months I checked her sex again and also had someone else check because she ALWAYS had a black beard and VERY male behaviour. Sure enough, she had two bulges and I thought "oh man noooo, she is a he" LOL

I decided to list "him" for sale a few weeks later. I posted the ad on all the classified sites, turned around from the pc and Cheyenne was mating with Buffy. I was shocked! I thought "whoa wait a minute, either Cheyenne is Gay or Buffy really is a female" LOL

Needless to say, I turned right back around and removed all the ads I had just posted listing "him" for sale lol and today we have the results of that day

we have a bunch of he shes or she hees.. o my.. i really have not had anyone else look at carrick, im pretty confident about sexing but he really has me baffled, i swear there were times i saw slight bulges but i think it was my imagination.. ah well.. maybe someone will see him in person someday and have a peek although i think im correct in thinking female. He blackens his beard also, bobs so hard he jumps up and down. i duno.. will just have to see i suppose. at lest it looks as though i am not alone

You know what else.... after that he/she debate I changed my policy on my site. I used to say "sex not guaranteed on hatchlings and young dragons under 3 months of age" It now says 6 months... that gives me a little extra time to say ok it's male, nope it's female and then back to nope it's male again LOL

it can be hard to tell, recently i went to pick out a dragon for matt here in california to have send to new jersey, i went through about 2 dozen dragons, was looking for a female, at that age it wasnt very obvious and had to look again and again to be sure, in the end we narrowed it down to 2 females out of those we thought female that had the best color, it was difficult and there was 3 of us at the end to give the final opinion that it was a female, many young ones are very difficult to tell, and then there is my lil male Daigh, hes as male as it gets, from the start you could tell and from here on in its gotten more and more obvious.

errrrrrrrr YUP!

It looks male, it acts male and yet it lays eggs and they hatch out beautiful LOL

SHE must be a mutant or something LMAO

That was taken when I had the big male / female debate at around 16 months old. I sent that picture to soooooooooo many breeders via email it's not even funny.

She looks very much female underneath now... strange.

Reiko....that's an interesting story. VERY similar to my ordeal with my big GG x Orange Glow male, Smoke. Sold to me as a male at a young age, has grown like a hurricane, @ 2 years old & 560 grams now & I can't tell what he is! No bulges, no black beard, no interest in anything at all but eating. I even took him over to JoelR's house (in a doggie carrier) for him to check him out....he lifted his tail and said some things I can't repeat! He couldn't tell what he is.
SO, we'll assume he is a she until proven otherwise.
Joel does think we should rename him PAT....like the Pat on Saturday Night Live!
poor little dragon :-]

reiko Sep 25, 2003 12:21 PM

thats how i feel! i have admitted he is female to myself but still every time i have him out i take a look, hehe, like maybe today there will be bulges, i turn his tail in different lights looking for shadows, im an idiot LOL, so i am in the same boat as you, female until proven otherwise. Carrick did show male behaviours with my female Gobi, but they could just be dominant or aggressive female behaviours too, some females are known for it. we just always assumed carrick was a he, kinda funny lol poor dragon, no Pat jokes! dont want this to catch on with our poor dragons do we Sharla?! lol

At least you didn't mistake the sex with a cat, like we did. That was bad!! The people we got our cats from said they were females. I didn't doubt them and never checked, although it is harder to miss on mammals. But as the 'girls' grew, I kept calling one of them "my boy" as he had that slinky big male cat walk. I was informed by my hubby that I should not call her a "boy" all the time. Well, took the "girls" in to get them fixed, and the vet gave me a look like I'm an idiot and informed me one was a boy. So, Phoebe became Phoebus.

What sex is daigh? heehee.

reiko Sep 25, 2003 12:51 PM

i have a cat, it used to be my boyfriends brothers cat, i adopted it as it became a stray. i looked at the cat and said, ya know, that cats a female... no no no everyone said, "it had its n**'* cut" i said nope, thats a female, for 8 years they said this cat was a male, i took it to the vet for all its shots etc, they listed it as male, the vet said to me, you sure this cat is a male, sure looks female to me.. i could alwyas feel the scar tissue where she was spayed on her tummy.

lol thats a funny story Eva, good thing ya didnt get kittens, or were they fixed before ya got them?

Daigh is ALLLL male hes a little weirdo too, getting pastel coloring, i dont know what is going on with his color, hes fading out to pastel, hehe.. gonna be a weird dragon, i think hes gonna be huge tho!

oops! well, you know carrick is being loved

>>
>>lol thats a funny story Eva, good thing ya didnt get kittens, or were they fixed before ya got them?

nope, no kittens, we had the kitties spayed and neutered. what is even worse in us not realizing his sex is that the kittens are 1/2 manx and neither of them had any tails. you would think we would of noticed the ba!!s hanging from the male. i mean there was no tail to obscure the view. i guess it goes to show you that we don't make a habbit of looking at THAT area. lol.

just curious, how often do you take the kids out for real sun?

Luc is big, he has no GG in him, he is weighing around 630 grams and about 22-23 inches. ahhh, luc and carrick will make HUGE babies. j/k

reiko Sep 25, 2003 04:34 PM

well i would love to have some of carricks offspring if she were to be bred, but would have to find the right male and the right person to raise the babies, i know of a few, but they are so far away, matt has a male that would be just perfect, but hes all the way in jersey.. bummer.. o well.. guess we will have to see

Foster and I would love to go on a California Vacation, lol. I would give Foster a vacation he would never forget I'm sure he would come home bragging, lol. He's just about as ready as he ever will be, but he is getting kinda in a funk. I can tell that he will brumate soon. Actually 4 out of my 5 adults are showing signs of slowing down. Guess they can really sense the weather and light changes cause their temps have not changed at all, but I did cut a half hour off their light period. Seems Foster will be ready for some spring babies Hope Candy or Anna is ready for him Your story had me going around and double checking sexes lol. Reaya is female for sure. She faked me out the first time I looked I thought she was male :P

carrick went down yesterday.. first year brumating, gonna miss the lil bug! well perhaps next year we will have to do that matt Carrick will be 2 in the spring, just right, and foster is the perfect male for certian. Foster and Candy are gonna have beautiful babies, i really hope those two hit it off, shes the best orange dragon i have seen, shes florecent, just beautiful, and a big girl too! well matt perhaps we can arrange something im so glad that reaya came out alright and is a female also, we sexed her the best we could, she was quite the small thing, so its hard, but we made our best educated guess have any new pics of the lil girl? should post all your dragons sometime, they are all so beautiful

LOL I know exactly how you feel, thought all this time Splatt was Male but after closer inspection a month or so ago, I saw that he was a female. Fortunately Splatt is a gender neutral name so no need to change her name. She's growing to be a big girl, weighed her today and she weighed in at 300g and is 17" long nose to tail tip. She has a good girth on her (though I didn't think to measure it) and a nice fat tail so is very well fed. Certainly poos alot even if its only been every other day lately.

Now that I know she is female, will have to watch to see if she decides to develop infertile eggs...hopefully she won't till the spring (if she decides to bermate that is). Will deal with that if it happens.

CheriS Sep 25, 2003 10:28 PM

around it or across from point to point?

NICe size beardie for a girl especially

reiko Sep 25, 2003 11:22 PM

totally around the wide part of the head, i cann measure from point to point for ya if you want, carrick is down for the count, i dont even think she would notice.. hehe.. gonna miss the bug ah well, will be up again in a short while i imagine
