Resources near Puerto Vallarta, Mexico?

HofR Sep 11, 2010 06:22 PM

In October, several of us will be going to an area north of Puerto Vallarta, Mexico to go herping. The areas we'll be near are San Blas (two hours north of Puerto Vallarta) and Playa las Tortugas (one and a half hours north of Puerto Vallarta). Anyone know any people in that area who could guide us or any specific areas we could go? Thanks for the input. Tim

No I don't but I've been a bit south of that area. There is some unbelievable habitat.. but procede with caution. Im sure you've been told that.

I went on a short (non herp trip, but it didn't stop me from looking) trip via jeep, and we were escorted by the Mexican police for safety. They were paid to escort us by the company.

Funny that I didn't see one iguana in the forest and hills, until we came down to a village where many sizeable iguanas were resting on the roofs of houses. Did see some interesting lizards and one DOR milksnake.

We went down to the coast to this small and beautiful bay. Not a sailboat in sight anywhere. I asked why there were no sailboats in such a perfect place. The answer: If am American is sailing his nice boat down here, its a matter of time before the boat is taken by bandits. Don't know how true that is, but I believe it. Looking back, I wouldn't even do that trip now.

Thanks for the input, Mark. No one has mentioned anything about danger from bandits anywhere near where we will be. How much further south were you from Puerto Vallarta?
