You think she's prego??

VolcomHerp Sep 11, 2010 10:16 PM

About 2 months back I had this Pink Columbian salmom Female with a nice sugar line pastel male that my buddy loaned me for a week to see if the young 8 month old little guy would be interested in her. I really didn't notice anything to special except they hooked up once in the middle of the night during the last couple of day's towards the end then they were at complete opposite ends of the cage afterwards. Later as times past I noticed a slight bulge on her but it seemed to kind of go away. I have been cautious still giving her small meals and she's been acting picky with the food i been giving her. Now she's been curled up a lot like this on the warmer side of the tub and she showed no interest at all for a fresh killed small Rat I was going to give her tonight. Could she be Prego?

From the looks of the picture she does look swollen. So 8 weeks ago she was with a 8 month old male for a week. In that week the male courted her, so she may be showing what is called a pre-ovulation swell from developing egg follicles preparing to breed.

Due to the fact that the male was only in with her for 1 week, she MOST likely isn't pregnant and if so, prepare for some unfertilized sacks and no babies!

If I were you I would find a minimum 18 month old male to put in with her immediately and hope he can finish what the other started. Keep the male in until after her (POS)Post-ovulation Shed and then raise her temps to around 84F ambient and 92F in the hot end for belly heat. I'm also hoping she is over 10 pounds and older than 3 years old.

Thanks for the info man! Here is a pick a while back before that little male was with her! Rosey is just about as tall as me and I'm 6 foot so she's got to be around 16-17 lbs and almost 5 years old. I hope if she does a sweet taters in her I hope she brings them out ok and nothing happens to her.

She is definitely breeding size and of age for sure. She is also very nice looking. I would still suggest putting a male with her because a week isn't long enough to get the amount of sperm levels needed for a good healthy litter.

Usually the male will court the female off and on anywhere from 3-8 weeks, then she will develop egg follicles when ready to breed and will swell up and have a pre-ovulation swell, don't mistake this for her being gravid and remove the male!

Keep the male with her this is the most important time. He will off and on copulate her for about a week. She will later go into a post ovulation shed (16-20 days) longer than usual and then after her shed, deliver a nice healthy liter around 95-105 days later.

Also I would not handle her unless absolutely necessary when she is breeding especially closer to delivering her babies. She also shouldn't even eat a small meal within a month of her expected delivery date because this can cause her to deliver a premature litter.

Hope this helps and if you are serious about breeding I would suggest reading The Ultimate Boa Manual's breeding section.

Nice looking girl...

Just wondering if that is the bin she lives in? Or if it was just for a picture?

Thanks...

I put her in there just to eat only.
