Rick Trenny remembered

Joe R. Sep 12, 2010 09:28 AM

It's been a little over three years since Rick's passing and I didn't want him to be forgotten. Rick Trenny along with his wife Becky owned and operated Renegade Reptiles in San Diego. Rick taught me more than I can remember about kingsnakes. He is why I got into breeding on a larger scale back in the 90's. He and Becky threw some of the best parties at their houses in Santee and Ramona. I remember listening to Rick and Gary Sipperly play some of the best classic rock at an anniversary party. His paintings left you wondering what his inspirations were, his sacrifice for the reptiles in his care made you wonder how he did it all and his life with Becky made you jealous for living the dream. I miss you my friend. If you like Coors lite and lamropeltis, tip one back while you're cleaning your cages and think about Rick.

I believe I had the honor to meet him once at the NARBA in Tinley Park. Truely a class act.

RossCA Sep 12, 2010 03:48 PM

I didn't know him. Sorry to hear about his passing. Was this him?

DMong Sep 12, 2010 05:03 PM

Yeah Ross, that was Rick with his wife Becky some years ago.

I didn't know him all that well personally, but I always heard good things about him from lots of people. I know he was very passionate about his love for snakes, and it is too bad that he passed away far before his time. He will definitely always be missed by many folks in the hobby.

That is actually the very same picture of him and his wife in Hubbs' getula book, and I think it was a great idea to include him and his wife, and the late Lloyd Lemke in his book too, as those guy's contributed greatly to this wonderful hobby of ours.

best regards, ~Doug

Thats a good thing because that book will be a very important one for many years to come. I'm sure a lot of people will eventually read it. I linked that photo from Hubbs facebook.

I totally agree there Ross. That book is the very best getula book that has ever been published, and as you said, it will be around for a long, long time for all to enjoy and learn from.

Actually Rainer would remember better... and Rich Hebron... but I believe it was 2004? Possibly the year of the Hurricaine...
I barely knew Rick but we were having drinks sitting around at Daytona and a bunch of us colubrid people were talking about Ball Pythons... even back then we were all freaking on that market. Then Rick said something that is kind of funny now...
he said " in a few years you are going to see tons of these morphs all in one cage with a sign that says take your pic $100".
I know it has not quite come to that but things have changed a lot and I did not think it was going to happen as fast as he did.
Something tells me if you looked hard enough at the bigger shows this year you may have found that cage Rick spoke of...
Most of the guys I met back then are all still breeding colubrids. I bet Rick would still be too.

Amen to that. I bet there are alot of the ultimate morphs where Rick is now, and I'm sure he's having a great time working with them.

Its been three years? I knew both Rick and his wife Becky. The last time I saw him, I took them out and found a nice tiger rattlesnake by my house.

Does anyone know what became of Becky?

Thanks for allowing us to remember such nice people. Cheers

Becky is remarried. I saw here at the last San Diego show hanging out with some old timers working their table.

She seems to be doing well.

I knew Rick and Becky Trenny quite well. Shared a table with him at Daytona for 4 years. I miss him dearly.

He was quite a musician. Played the guitar real well and sang to. He handled his death quite well. It was like he knew it was his time and acted as if nothing was different. Quite a man.

Rick was also thee nicest people I ever knew. And i am not just saying that because he is now gone. I said that about him wayyy before he passed. I can't say that about many people. He was honest, laid back and cared about people and the animals he sold them. Most folks only knew him through a small transaction or two at a busy show. But getting to know him, he was an amazing person.

This is the first I have heard of Rick Trenny, being as I am new to this hobby, but I feel I must express a debt of gratitude to him and other pioneers like him who have made the hobby so easy for newbies to enjoy.

Rick & Becky were some of the first herpers I met on my first trip
to California in 1998 and did much to welcome me and introduce me around. Always a supporter of both kingsnake.com and NRAAC I miss Rick.

Rick is definitely greatly missed. God Bless Becky. I remember talking to him about Hognoses @ several local shows. My friend Aaron bought his first Hognose from him. Man, he has touched alot of lives. What a legacy he has. Well done, Rick.

I just realized the date you posted this. For some reason, I decided to wear this T-shirt the first day of the NARBC show. Must have been picking up on the "wave-length"! Rick definitely was one of the exceptional people in the herp community, and so was Becky.
