Help! Pumilio with a bad case of parental neglect!

andersonii85 Sep 25, 2003 12:18 PM

My blue jeans keep laying fertile clutches of eggs without attending to the older clutches. I have gotten 19 fertile eggs over the span of a week. Any suggestions? I have about 13 artificial egg deposition sites and a few scattered broms (I check all sites daily and no tads), but they seem not to care. Has anyone found a food source that works well for the tads to the point where spindly leg is kept to a minimum? Any help/criticism would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Is this behavior taking place in the same enclosure? If so, what is the sex ratio of breeders in the enclosure? My guess would be, if you have several females in the enclosure and at least one male, then this male is breeding with the other females. Watch the outcome and see what happens to the larva when they hatch. Let us know how it goes.

There is only one pair and both are in the same enclosure. 1:1 male:female. This has worked best for me so far but this is the first time I have seen this type of behavior. Then again this is the female's first mating.

Hey Justin,
Relax, it will take about a month or so for them to start caring for their tads/eggs. I had the same experience with a couple of Bri Bri pairs also. Both females had not been bred before, so I think it just takes them a bit to get going. Now both of the females are depositing eggs for their tads constantly. Make sure the temp and humidity requirements are met and there are plenty of food items available in the enclosure and you will be fine. So just sit back and watch the show

hello,
if this is the first time your pair has been together, you should just relax for a few. the mother is prolly still getting the hang of it. i had the same thing happen to me.

I remember when one of my mother pumilios laid a second clutch when it was still rearing the first. the pumilio can do strange things. Last February, I had two baby Blue Jeans emerge from the water.

Just remember to supply them with generous amounts of food.
