Two new P.d.jani & Sex Quiz (vent pics)

PaulJH Sep 12, 2010 02:38 PM

I recently picked up 1.1 08 Northern Mexican Pines so I thought I'd share some photos of them along side my 09 jani from ALT. The tiny little 08s came from J. Michael Phillips (thought I don't know their origins - he acquired them in a trade).

Vent and tail shots below. First, body and head shots of each. Reply with your thoughts on their sex, then see what everyone else things! No cheating!

08 jani #1: weighed in at 69.1g today before eating two fuzzies (11.34g of mouse).

08 jani #2: weighed in at 65.7g today before eating two fuzzies (10.96g of mouse).

09 jani (with #1 for comparison): weighed in at 163g before 28g of mouse.

And here are some butt shots if you're curious about their sex...

That's exactly what I told Paul yesterday

...and the opposite of what the labels on their cages say, though this could be the result of a mix up on my part while unpacking the two, or on the part of a previous owner.

Anyone care to offer details justifying the call? Or pictures comparing other male/female pits??

To play devil's advocate, I was thinking #1 might be female due to the relatively short bulge before the tail tapers (it only extends about 4 scale lengths before tapering), and that maybe #2 was male as it doesn't taper as abruptly. #2 is also a bit thinner, which may (or may not) bias the comparison.

The 09 is decidedly male.

What I said before:
#1 08 jani is male.
#2 08 jani is female.
09 jani is male.
Well, I could certainly be wrong.

Female. Shorter tail and the tail sort of indents just aft of the vent.

Male. Longer tail and a slight bulge just aft of vent.
This is another colubrid, king snake, but it seems the general anatomy should be similar.

Nah, I doubt you're wrong - short of probing them, I'm pretty sure you've got it right.

Nicely illustrated w/ those pics, too

Thanks Randy

Care to chime in on the gender of the two 08s?

I would guess from top to bottom. Male-female-male. The top 08 one is a little iffy but often a yearling is only a little wider just below the vent in male jani and gets wider, further down as they grow and age.

Thanks Randy - #1 Male, #2 Female, seems to be the consensus.
