Getting an albino het male

BennyD Sep 25, 2003 12:44 PM

Weeeee,

I just put a deposit down on an albino het male hatchling. They're waiting for them to start feeding but I will pick him up in a week or two, probably going to buy the cage for him today and breed him in a few years so I can finally have an albino baby heh.

Question: What would happen if i bred an albino het male to a normal female? Just more hets? Or is there a small, small chance I might get an albino baby?

Regards,
Ben

When breeding a Het to a normal you get 50% possible het offspring. So one half of the normal looking babies will be het, there is just no way of knowing which ones. There is an extremely small chance you could some how buy a normal and have her be het albino, but the chances are slim to none. It would have to be the offspring from an albino parent or het., which is highly unlikely to be sold as a normal. YOu best bet would be buy some chace het baby females, and try and prove some to be het albino. Hope that helps.

So when buying a het male i want to make one of his parents was an albino and hes "100% albino het"?

The only possible ways to get true 100% het babies (of any morph except co-dominate traits like pastel) is:

1) Morph (i.e. albino) normal= All the offspring will look normal but all will be het for that morph (i.e. albino hets)

2) Morph (i.e. albino) 100% het for morph (i.e. albino het)= Most offspring will be morphs (albino) and a few will be 100% hets

You cannot EVER get a morph by mating a het or a morph to a normal. The normal gene is the dominate trait so that is what will show.

Good luck on your project. I too am working a Albino project. I bought my pair of 100% het for albino 6 months ago and I'm just waiting for them to grow.

just a question, you wrote:

"2) Morph (i.e. albino) 100% het for morph (i.e. albino het)= Most offspring will be morphs (albino) and a few will be 100% hets"

Why would you think most would be albino?? If you breed a recessive morph with a 100% het, the morph always passes the desired gene, but the het, "speaking from a probability standpoint" only passes on the desired gene half the time.
Thus the result would be half morph/half 100% het, if you had a sufficient sample size.
Although, these probabilities vary with small samples so the outcome can be skewed to either extream.

HI BENNY, YOU MIGHT GET A ALBINO OR TWO. OR THEY COULD ALL BE HETS BUT... THATS THE FUN IN BREEDING YA NEVER KNOW WHAT YOUR GOIN TO GET TILL THEY ARE BORN. I REALY HOPE YOU GET SOME ALBINOS CUZ THEY ARE REAL COOL.

unless the female was sold as a normal but was a het. Which is highly unlikely to happen. When breeding a 100% het. albino male to a normal female all the babies in the clutch will have a 50% chance of being HET. albino.

I've heard reliable reports of "normal" female ball pythons turning out to be hets at least twice. Sure it's not likely but it can and does happen.

Josh06 Sep 25, 2003 08:08 PM

Yea but even if there were 10 that you knew of, compare that with the amount of times that a het. has been bred to a normal and no homozygous animals came out. The odds are definetely very much against you..

That's just the price of the male hets at East Bay Vivarium (local pet store, www.eastbayvivarium.com, check out the price lists), if they aren't 100% het I can always get my deposit back, I will be sure to ask tomorrow.

By the way, what is your topic supposed to mean? If your're refering to the fact that I post a lot, I have a very boring job where I sit at the computer all day, and I'm just trying to get my questions answered, sorry if I offended anyone.

Congrats on the purchase/deposit

You sound a little new to genetics so here is some free advice. ASSUMING money is an issue in the purchase (assuming you are not a new lotto winner), when you are going to start a simple recessive breeding project, I would offer this:

-you want your male to be the best animal in your project, either an albino or a 100% het, you want to buy females first, because they take longer to mature than males, and males are very easy to find, for a very low price. You can buy a female tomorrow, and wait a year to buy your male, and figure next year the price on the male may even be lower.

Good luck!

Dave
