Some Ohio-style Milks

tspuckler Sep 13, 2010 09:34 PM

Today seemed like a pretty good day to check out a dozen or so strategically placed boards that look like this:

The first board had two milks under it, a yearling and an adult female. Smaller Eastern Milks often have "chestnut" blotches on a grey background, which chage colors as the snake ages.

The larger milk was this freshly shed female.

She was quite feisty and did a lot of tail vibrating and striking.

He's a photo of the younger one after I got it out from under the board. It had kind of a whacky head/neck pattern.

The most commonly seen snakes were Eastern Garters. We saw 10-12 of them.

Only one DeKay's Snake (Brown Snake) was seen.

The short outing came to a close with this way-cool male Eastern Milk.

It wasn't a bad way at all to spend half an hour in the field!

I could do the same thing...only I would find black racers!

That is awesome...like fishing in a barrel!

Did you set this up (the boards)?

Great post!

I DID do the same thing in Florida, in the 1990s. Yep, Southern Black Racers & an Eastern Coachwhip. LOL
