I feel like I'm losing the Battle

Z_G_Reptiles Sep 14, 2010 09:23 AM

Several months ago I posted with pics of my sunglow boa that looked like it had swollen hemi penes, and antibiotics didn't help so the vet went in and removed an abscess just south of the hemipenes and put back on antibiotics, this seemed to make it better for a little while, then it starting to look like he had a marble on the side of his tail so I had to go back and he had to lance it and flush it and put back on antibiotics, at this point it get even better, well it started to get bad again about 3 weeks ago and I saw some discoloration in the area and scratched it and a little pin hole opened up and squirted out a milky fluid, that smelt like musk, so off to the vet once again, he looked at it squeezed out a bunch of puss and put him back on antibiotics, he's still on antibiotics but I'm back to the vet because it is still extremely swollen looks like there's bruising from the swelling, the little hole is bigger and kinda black and smells like musk/dead flesh, so I'm thinking necrosis is starting to set in. during this process I have been rinsing/flushing it with a betadine solution.

I had a Suri RTB pass on me completely unexpected a month before this started and it's really getting me to think about getting out of boas, here's a pic of the guy when it first became noticable

Sorry to hear that you are still dealing with this Zack.

At the risk of sounding repetetive, have you had the vet specificaly check the vent gland? That is what produces the musk, and I'm curious if you are smelling musk if that may be the issue. That gland is VERY hard to clean out and or to express any puss or infected material due to it's honey comb structure. I lost a very prized Hypo male due to this. This gland can be completely removed without any complications other than the surgery itself.

Thank You Jeff, I'll mention that to him today when I go. I remember you mentioning this but I kept forgetting what exact gland you were refering to and couldn't find the old thread. I'm having a feeling this is what it is because yes it does smell like musk and my first thought was oh shoot (of course not the real word I used, lol) he has a block somewhere.

I have lost two Boas from an infected scent gland going septic. If there's ever a "next time" , I will have it removed.
