Sterlite Vs. Mortar tubs

joshj16 Sep 25, 2003 01:03 PM

I want to build a rat rack, and I'm just wondering what the pros & cons of Sterlite tubs and Mortar tubs are. Any comments would be helpful. Thanks.

I was also wondering how many breeding adults each could hold.

take it from someone whos been down that road before..

use the mortar tubs for your animals.. sterilites are good for snakes because snakes dont CHEW

you will have severe chewing problems if you use them for your animals. the key to picking a tub design, is finding one with NO inner edges for the animals to chew on, mortar tubs are perfect for this because they have no edges

in the "large" mortar tubs measuring 29" X 19" X 6" you can keep 1.3 with no problems.

best of luck

Have to agree with Dan. I use Sterlite tubs. Up until recently it was no problem. One group chewed through a top. Another through a side. I liked the Sterlite tubs because I have a narrow shed that the rats and snakes stay in. Last weekend I found some cement tubs that are only a little wider. This weekend I'm going to get three more.

I keep 1.4 in a 20" X 28" X 6" tub. Since I don't keep that many rats, I don't use a rack. I make tops out of 1" X 2" covered with 1/2" hardware cloth. Into these I set a feed hopper. Then I stack the tubs on top of each other with 2" X 4"s between them. I haven't tried this with the tubs yet, but they seem strong enough.
