Ripped off?

novicekeeper Sep 14, 2010 03:31 PM

Hey everyone, I'm posting this in the ball forum and also the boa forum since it has a little to do with each.

I'm curious to know what everyone does if they are unfortunate enough to get ripped off during a sale or trade. Obviously it's a little harder during a sale since the money comes in first. I'm about to do my first trade, well maybe, and I'm nervous of course because I have to send first. I'm trading a hypo het albino boa for a pastel ball python. I'm not going to go into the guy I'm trading with, he seems decent enough, but there are always things that make you wonder. Anyway, what would happen if I sent first and I got nothing in return? What can I do as my course of action if that happens? I've also read about the BOI or something like that but I don't know what it is, could someone help on that as well? I appreciate any responses that I get, I just want to make sure I'm covered. Thanks.

if you don't feel comfortable with the deal....then don't do it.

Here is the BOI. You can search the name of the person you're dealing with on here. Trades can be tricky. I've done a few and haven't had any issues yet.

Reputation and Trust are things most of the breeders strive for.
I wouldn't trade an animal to someone that I have never dealt with before, or have had someone deal with him previously.
Best up luck with the transaction, keep us updated.

A signed contract maybe????? I don't do trades, never have been very comfortable with them so I'm not really framiliar on this whole thing. But possibly offer a signed contract, then you might really see what that person is up to. If he doesn't sign, he is probably going to rip you off. The only way to cover your a** is to have everything in writing. Unless you trust this guy and have done business in the past....get it in writing.

If you are not feeling comfortable sending your snake first, ask the guy if he can send first. I would take careful photo's of the snake you are sending as trade. Keep all emails/correspondence with the guy as well as all his information (ie phone, name address).

Send the pictures to him via email (thus you have an email showing it is the snake he agreed to trade a pastel to you for) Ask for detailed pictures of the pastel he will be trading for your boa. Keep these emails.

If he does happen to rip you off, file a report with the police. Give them all the email 'trail' you collected (emails carry header information about source (IP address, ISP etc.) which can be used to confirm an email was sent from a particular computer. Having photo evidence which identifies the snake you send will also make it easier to recover it, if necessary. Unless the guy is a real pro...it isn't likely to be hard for police to track him down.

I am no expert on boa morphs..but giving pastel ball pythons are pretty cheap these days, it kind of sounds like he's getting a more valuable snake than you are. Unless hypo albino boas are going for the same price as pastel ball pythons.
