Flagyl Dosing

livinginvestment Sep 14, 2010 10:04 PM

Hi,

Spent a lot of $$ on vet bills fixing problems. I am starting to believe it could have been prevented with a little preventative measures.

I've lost 9 boas and pythons in the last 2 years. 3 have had necropsies. All came back with the same results. Bacterial Septicemia. One GTP had parasites which they believed lead to the Septic problem.

So, I am looking to start a regime to help prevent further problems and deaths. I have discussed Flagyl with my vet and I wanted to ask the forum on their opinion of what the correct dosage for Boas and smaller pythons would be. I heard that 50ml per kilo is the correct dosage.

Would anyone with experience with this please chime in?

Thanks,

Kenny

Only use flagyl if you get a fecal or cloacal swab which indicates that flagyl will be effective. Otherwise, you're wasting money and risking the health of your animals.

The following is straight out of "Understanding Reptile Parasites" by Klingenberg

"For minor protozoal infestations the author doses Flagyl at 25-50 mg/kg or 10-20 mg/lb, given once and repeated 304 days later. For more serious disorders (giardia, amebiasis, etc.) the same dosage can be given daily for 5-7 days. It should be noted that several sources in the literature suggest using doses as high as 125-175 mg/kg! In light of toxic reactions in some reptiles, it seems inappropriate to use a dose that could be toxic even to some mammals. The authors has found the lower recommended dose to work as well as the higher dose, so why take chances?"

Hope that helps!

I hear you. But with numerous necropsies and animals already dying without a $200 injection regiment, the Dr, and a reputable Dr. I might ad. agreed to this. I spoke of other's bad luck with Flagyl and there will be a testing on one animal before administering to more. I shall post results.

Thanks,

Kenny

lol...no, the Flagyl is $26 for 1800 mg.

The visit Fortex Amikacin Needles per animals runs from $130 - $200 depending on the size of the animal and how much I need.
