XIAMEN (China) 11 September 10 Man hospitalized after being bitten by beheaded snake in Xiamen
A man in Xiamen was hospitalized for snake venom after being bitten by a beheaded cobra that had been killed 5 minutes earlier, reports fjsen.com.
Mr Zhang is a 40-year-old temporary worker in a restaurant who kills the snakes occasionally while busy in the restaurant.
On 8th Sep, he killed a nearly 2-kilogram and 1-meter-long cobra. Like usual, he threw the snake head into a washbasin. After 5 minutes when everything was done, he thought that it was safe to pick the snake head out of the washbasin with his bare hands. However, the snake head suddenly raised around and bit his thumb when he was trying to squeeze its neck. He was greatly shocked.
After the poisonous bite, he started to feel dizzy and sweating. Seeing this, his workmates sent him to the hospital immediately.
“I would never dare to kill a snake again”, said Mr Zhang while the reporter met him in the hospital.
Dr Wang Yi, associate chief physician of the emergency department of Zhongshan Hospital, told the reporter that after having its head cut off, the snake bite is still poisonous, so Mr Zhang would possibly lose his thumb and further observation is needed for the next couple of days.
According to Dr Wang, it was the second such case in Zhongshan Hospital, the first one happened a few years ago.
The doctor warns that you should not touch the snake head with hands even it has been cut off and don’t touch the dead snake with your body, but use stick-like objects to pick them aside.
