WXIX (Cincinnati, Ohio) 13 September 10 Alligator bites arm of man trying to rescue it
West Miami-Date, FL (CNN): All Alexander Alcantare wanted to do was help an animal in trouble, but what he got instead was a big bite in his arm.
Alexander Alcantare saw the 7' alligator in a canal with an arrowhead lodged in its head. With one arm – he lost half of his other arm trying to save a bird's nest near power lines - Alcantare baited and dragged the sharp-toothed, tough-skinned victim ashore. As a reward, the gator bit him.
Despite the deep teeth marks on his arm, Alcantare pedaled home on a bike with his 7' patient, hoping to save its life.
Alcantare called in the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission once he pulled off yet another risky animal rescue. Alcantare says he's not so happy with the reward from FWC.
"Somehow, I ended up with a citation," he said. "And I got to get a permit for my raccoon."
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission cautions people to leave animal-saving to professionals, this man only received a bite this time. They say he's lucky - his injury could have been much worse.
