Our first attempt at breeding--success!

pythonaddict Sep 18, 2010 11:52 PM

Well, our first attempt at breeding was a success! So far, out of five eggs (one was a plug), we have one fully hatched and one still pipped. And we are excited. To many of you, this is armature hour, we know. But we did what so many say is wrong... we allowed maternal incubation. Many of you will probably frown on this...and that's fine. But, we did it for multiple reasons...1) we wanted to see the interesting process. 2) To be honest, we didn't know what the heck we were doing, but a mother's instinct is always on the money. 3) It wasn't about money or time, we wanted to learn.

So, we have one here, and one to be here shortly. Not sure what the others will do. But, for first timers choosing against an incubator, I think it went pretty well.

Wow that is awesome to see. I always wondered how successful maternal incubation is in captivity with balls. I guess in a normal clutch it doesnt hurt to see what happens. Interesting indeed. Thanks for sharing.

Hey, there's nothing wrong w/that! If that's what your into, that's cool! The only reason people don't usually do it, is you can't normally get the mom's body weight back in time for the following year!

Thank you everyone. We got a lot of flack before when we discussed doing maternal incubation, so I really expected a lot of negative comments. But my excitement outweighed what I assumed would be said. Yes, getting her weight back up will be a concern, but if she's not ready to breed next year, then we can skip. We have no true interest in becoming serious breeders, it's more of the excitement of seeing what we saw when we came home yesterday. It was absolutely amazing, to watch her surround her eggs and little faces staring at us. And it would have been nice if that stripe down the first one's back was complete! But we figured neither parents were het for anything, so it's not an issue.

As for an update: second one is still being lazy and hasn't come the rest of the way out. And a third has pipped. I'd say pretty good results for first timers.

If all goes as planned, we think next year we'll breed her to our pastel.
