Got my RodentPro shipment, I have questions about feeding...

Ppk Sep 25, 2003 02:39 PM

I got it from Airbourne Express. I opened it up and I let a mouse thaw for about 30 minutes in warm water and then I put it outside, thus afterwards I gave it to him. I would like to know however, since the mice I ordered are 2.5-3 inches long, is it safe for him to have at 22" (with the tail he is a little over a foot in body length). I have been feeding him live 3 inch long mice but the frozen ones from RodentPro are very distorted and they are very stretched out. He will fine right? I gave it to him and he attacked and swallowed it instantly so I'd say they are good for him.

You put it outside? Other than to possibly feed a passing raven or seagull, what would the purpose of that be?

If it ate then it is probably fine. I do not use that supplier, I am not sure what it is, but the mice look dehydrated/old to me, but I am picky.

Yeah, it was in a Zip-Loc bag though. It was thawed after being in the water but I wanted it to dry so I put it outside in the zip-loc. No ravens or seagulls around here either though...

I used to do all sorts of weird things, but I have found that my lizards do not care if they are wet.

Now I just throw them in warm water (no bags), once defrosted, feed them to lizards. When I dry them (usually for snakes) I just use a paper towel.

After they defrost they look like any healthy frozen thawed mouse. If he ate it especially quickly then theres no problem, feed on and enjoy the animal. Ive gotten mice from several sources and the rodentpro mice draw their attention the quickest, I guess because they are fresher and smell like fresh mice, they are also bigger than what almost all other suppliers send as that size or age. The only fresher mice Ive tried were vacuum packed and were much more expensive, oh well they dont last long enough to worry about them not being eaten.

I am satisfied. They are big, they are slightly bigger than the live mice I have been getting for him at the store. I selected large mice since my sav is only a juvenile. When he reaches 28"which at the rate he has been growing will probably be in around November-December) I will probably switch him to jumbo mice. The only problem I have is that the mice are so tightly packed, they get stuck together. I didnt want to touch them so I was using anything I could get a hold on at the time (a screwdriver left in the basement from when I built him his new enclosure last week) and I pryed one off and dropped it in the zip-loc. I read on their sites they pack them so they arent stuck together. Ah, whatever, if my sav likes them, I'll keep buying.

They dont care about smelling you on them, and they go down quicker when wet. I feed jumbos to my albigs, the biggest meals that Sobek gets are 5-10 ounce chicken peeps (what rodentpro calls 5 ounce or week olds).

Ugh, why do those stupid smiley faces keep coming up. I didn't intend on putting that crying face or whatever it is on, it was an accident so no confusions there. Also, how do I show pictures on this site?
