Fogger in Jungle Carpet Python cage

midnight777 Sep 20, 2010 05:14 PM

I am thinking on building a fogger/humidifier for my jungle carpet python cage and wanted opinions on if it would be ok or not ok for it in the cage. Ive seen them in cages before but didnt know if it was alright.

If/when the ambient humidity is low, then a humidifer is great. But if the ambient humidity is correct for a JCP (I think in the 60-90% range) then you should not have it running.

A good humidifier is a big water bowl with a heat pad under it and plug the heat pad on lamp dimmer. I like to elevate the bowl with felt pads to allow just a tad of airflow and attach the heater to the underside of the bowl. To adjust humidity, adjust the dimmer setting. Turn heater off for the least humidity. Easy, fairly inexpensive, effective. And adjustable. I prefer ceramic bowls for this application.

Another idea especially if using a melamine cage is to keep the cage dry and provide a humid hide area. You can use a plastic storage box with a big hole cut into the lid and fill with sphagnum moss. Or heck, forget the lid altogether. Keep one end under the heater.

Another idea - get one of those wood nestboxes they sell for large birds and hang that up above the floor (fill box with moist sphagnum moss).

I may do the bird box idea and put the fogger on the floor with good ventilation. I just put the water bowl on the heat pad to help with the humidity.
