baby collards housing

chondrodan Sep 25, 2003 03:24 PM

thanks for the replize, i take it they are small for baby collards as these are the first i have seen and have had them for only a day now. i will start to feed them more and will get a syringe and water them.
i have them housed in a rubber made at the mo with 8% uvb tub i ninc above them, the cageis half on a heat mat and i have no substrate. they have places to hid and a water dish (shallow)a small plastic plant which i spray with water.does that sound ok.

cheers Danny.

Getting a couple nice stable bricks, then place a flat rock across the top. Next get a clamp on incandescent light, that shines directly on the flat rock. Pick up a reptile thermometer at your local petstore, then adjust the distance of the light, and/or wattage to get you a nice rock that has a temp of about 105. Collareds love to bask in the light, and will get a lot more energy. The will normally get up in the morning, bask for several minutes, then they are ready to eat.

thanks for your suggestion, i have a small rock in the viv under a light so thats cool.are they relativly hardy baby lizards?and i would think they grow fast at those high temps, will keep you all posted.

Hi,
I was wondering what you were using there for a substrate? It looks like cedar shavings? I am not a Collared expert but for all other reptiles that I know of Cedar is toxic to them. If it's not Cedar, Great! If so, I thought I should point this out so you could get a second opinion and remove it if necessary. In my opinion wood shavings of any kind have a fair to great risk of causing impaction in small lizards. I would get rid of them completely. However this is strictly my opinion.

that looks a lot like what some beardie people use.. just regular old bran

could be bran, i use to use that in my dragon cages too but found that it gets moldy, it's too damp in Seattle in the winter for it. Had some problems with moths hatching out of it too. That was the feed stores fault though. Worked great in the summer however and smells nice too, easy to clean up! AND the best part digestable. Hopefully that is all it is but I thought I would just make sure, pet stores will sell you anything as we all know! Cedar is abundant and many pet stores don't know it's harmful to reptiles.

pet stores are always pushing something that isn't entirely safe...and i don't use the bran because i don't like messy dusty things.... in all of my cages (save the wds) i use remanant peices of vinyl that i pick up at the fabric store.. really easy to wipe down and if i have a stubborn stain i use a mixture of vinegar and water .... super easy.. i used to use playsand in the beardie cages but i just built each of them a sand box so they have something to dig in .. just not something to poop in.. they are pretty much potty trained (or at least poop on the paper towel) except for days like today when the tease me and poop right next to the paper towel..

ohh and btw when using bran you should freeze it first so you don't get bugs...

I didn't have the time or a freezer big enough to freeze bran for my beardie enclosures. I just switched over to flagstone as a flooring with newspaper underneath. It looks really nice and is easy to clean. I just take the pieces outside and pressure wash them.
