Eastern Kentucky box turtle

rtdunham Sep 21, 2010 11:02 AM

We ran across (well, not literally, but almost) this one Sunday on a winding, two-lane road between Floyd and Carter Counties in Eastern Kentucky. I had to drive a ways before i could find a pull off, and several vehicles, including a large pickup towing a boat, straddled it before i got back to take it off the road.

I was struck by its coloration. Maybe I've just not seen good examples lately, but the shell seemed particularly clean and orange.

Very fluorescent looking. Never seen one quite like that. They're usually coated with mud when I seem tho LOL.
