Snake shipping suspended......

xblackheart Sep 22, 2010 03:08 PM

GRRRR. I just went to sign up for the reptiles express shipping and they have a big notice that they are suspending the shipment of snakes. Does anyone know of the reason, when they are expected to get it cleared up and what is an alternate course of action. I have a minor discount through FedEx, but shipping is still like $50 a package!

Why are snakes such a big deal over lizards and the like? I hear "Ship Your Reptiles" has also banned the shipping of snakes. Whats the deal?

I am not 100 percent sure, but I think it started with venomous snakes being shipped through Ship Your Reptiles illegally and being caught.

the home page of reptilesexpress.com. It says in underlined print

We have temporarily suspended the acceptance of snakes for shipping through Reptiles Express. We expect to resume acceptance of snakes in the near future. Please check back often for updates.

right under the button that says "apply for membership now"

Is there another company out there?

The "deal" is, and has ALWAYS been the ignorant general publics innate ridiculous fear of snakes....it's really as simple as that!

I just cannot understand why a person that is paid to grab a stupid cardboard box and simply ship it, cannot just DO IT!

Seems like more people would be willing to ship a man-eating Bengal Tiger rather than a silly freakin hatchling cornsnake!!!

I guess it boils down to...."OMG!!, what could be inside this scarey box!!"..AAAHHHHHH!!!"

If I were in charge of hiring package handlers at UPS, I would ask on the application......."would you be afraid to handle a secure insulated sealed box with a harmless snake inside it?". And if the answer was yes, then it would ......"SEE YA!..................NEXT!"

These people are handling BOXES!, not the SNAKES THEMSELVES!, so what the hell would it matter WHAT is inside for cryin out loud!

I really can only speak for the past 10 years... but as far as I recall FedEx was the company that made an exception for this hobby to be able to ship legally. Times are tough and we are looking to save cash but it is a shame that things have changed so much. I remember years back people were OK with paying whatever the cost was for shipping to do it the proper way and it was a privilege to buy direct from a breeder and have a snake shipped to your door.
After FedEx did what they have done for the hobby many people bailed on them to save money. It is the way things are... and most don't care but I for one think that they're the company that deserves my business. They have done a lot for me and the hobby and I doubt I will ever use anyone else.
I also think it is good to go ahead and get certified with them even if you intend to have a preference for someone else... it's good to have a backup
Good luck

there are certain places where it seems to take an act of congress and endless free time to wait on hold to even get a chance to talk to someone about getting certified through Fed Ex for shipping snakes....namely here.
I gave up on Fed Ex after spending an average of about thirty minutes a day, over a week and a half, sitting on hold and getting the run-around only to accomplish nothing.

I spoke with a person who says they give their customers an option and they choose the cheaper one every time. Reptile Express is doing it legally! The problem is that there are some at the local drop off ports that are freaked out over the snakes. Hopefully they will get it all worked out. I don't want to pay 50 bucks for a 35 dollar snake. Even a 100 dollar snake! I have done it and probably will again but I really have to want that snake to pay an extra 50 to have it shipped. Just my opinion.
