Gaping and shaking

alreynolds2003 Sep 25, 2003 04:11 PM

Over the last 5 minutes my veild has been sitting with his mouth open... his tail is curled and he is still displaying light, but brighter colors. when i moved closer to him his mouth got wider, (before i was watching him from a distance) and when i got right up to the cage his mouth got extremely wide and then his whole body twitched. does anyone know what this could be a symptom of?

my chameleon(he's 6 months old today)does the same thing everytime i try to take him off the pothos above his cage. ususally it works like this. i reach up with one hand he puffs up. i take my hand away. then put it back up. still puffed up he opens his mouth wide as though he is yawning then does his little shaking or vibrating(whatever you want to call it)thing. i take my hand away as he does this. wait 15 minutes go back and then he is ok. i just have to coax him off the pothos. he doesn't want to let go of it usually. this is also usually after he has been outside for a few hours. when i bring him back inside i put him on the top of the cage and when HE is ready he goes back in, but only after going up the pothos for a bit. i'm not sure if this helps at all. but you describtion pretty much matches my chameleon's action.
how old is your chameleon. you have any picture?

Hi-

Chameleons do strange things! From the sound of things he was just being a Veiled. I don't think this is a symptom of anything, just normal veiled growing pains.!LOL! After all Veileds are know for there tempers! Hope this helps!

All of mine do it. It is like a big dominance display!
I think it is just a territorial showing off kind of thing. Like staking a claim or warning off intruders. Just a good guess but I notice they all do it if someone comes close.
