Is it possible...

hurqleys Sep 25, 2010 08:41 AM

To get such bad odds on a Albino x 100% Het pairing to come out with only Hets? I bred my Albino male to a 100% het female and she produced 4 eggs for me. I was hoping I got a 50/50 shot at producing albinos. Well, come to find out they are all hets. Sad thing is the father died with some sort of breeding complication and this female came from a recognized breeder. Another question is how often does this happen and should the breeder be questioned as to if this is a true 100% het or not? Thanks for your input

It is absolutely possible. when people talk about odds, they often leave out the part that the odds apply to each individual egg. So you have a 50/50 shot per egg...and it sounds like you got the short end of the stick. it happens to everyone, though most people don't talk about it. I've heard of people having to breed a female 4 or 5 times before she finally proves out.

Sorry to hear about your male passing. probably the worst part of working with live animals is that their mortality is an ever present factor.

Totally possible and happens more than you would think. The odds all even out in the end though. My first clutch this year, mojave to norm, 6 eggs, all normals. Not a good way to start the year but my last clutch more than made up for it.

I proved a poss het pied this year. From a pied male to a poss het female, 10 eggs and one pied. I also had a pied male to poss het female with 9 eggs but no pieds. Makes me wounder if I should try again.

I also hit a pastel hypo mojave. pastel mojave het hypo to a het hypo female. Only got three eggs but hit the best possible combo. It just needed to be a male.

very possible....

poss het ghost female....het 5 ghost 1
poss het ghost female....het 5 1 dead egg

this year, het to albinos....6 girls...average 7 eggs each....
7 -4 duds 1 albino
7 -3 duds 2 albinos
7 -2 duds 3 albinos
7 -1 dud 2 albinos
I forget the other numbers....but it was like 4 albino and 3 at the most....maybe less....some laid 8 eggs I think....(they usually lay 8,to 10 each, real bad year)

......yes....you can get all male or all female or all morphs or hets ....it all averages in the end...some are just luckier most times than others.....

Odds really are a gamble...

All I wanted this past season was female pastels...
What I got was 5 eggs total...4 pastels...3 males.
The female pastel I ended up with was a total spaz too. Real attitude.

Yes,
I breed my male albino to female het albino.
4 eggs, 4 albinos. 1 male 3 female.

So this does not mean the female is an albino.

Sick odds... bet I know what your keeping. Just remember, the odds go both ways and in the next five years, that same paring may throw you a dud clutch too. Nice thing about recessives, even when they are normal looking, at least you have hets, and a known het is worth more than most people think.... as your odds pointed out.

Each egg has a 50% chance of being an Albino. Flip a coin 4 times and you and EASILY get 4 heads or tails in a row, which is basically what you did.

RandyRemington Sep 26, 2010 05:12 AM

The cumulative odds of missing 4 times in a row on a 50% chance is 1 in 16.

I had the opposite "problem" last year...3 eggs...all 3 where albinos...so very much so possible.

If you read into genetics, it talks about the punnet square being EXPECTED outcomes.. Not guaranteed outcomes,. It happens all the time, as a lot of other breeders have been telling you, so don't get discouraged. If you aren't sure about whether or not the female you have is het for albino, breed another 100% het albino to her next year and for a few clutches and see if you get an albino.

I originally bred the male albino to two different females that were purchased from the same breeder. I do understand that the squares are really just a "suggestion box" more or less but I guess it sucks more cuz the male died. I was hoping for atleast one out of the bunch because I would get something out of the loss but no, I got the dirty end of the stick. Well, this coming year I hope to prove out a Spider PH albino and hope I have way better odds. Appreciate all the reassurement.
