2010 neonates & one or two other things.

terryd Sep 26, 2010 05:28 PM

Here are a few neonates I'm working w/ of late, and by working w/ I mean trying to get feeding on pink heads or full pinks. So far so good I only have a few snotty hold outs.

First of all I'm really happy w/ a very nice clutch of Pale milk snakes (L. t. multistrata). Cherry co. NE.

I got a few het for hypo syspila from my big gorilla syspila ♀. I know you've all seen her before but I absolutely enjoy this old girl, and it will be a sad day when she passes on.

Here is the ♂ she was bred to.

And here they are in the throes of passion from this spring.

Here's a couple of the het nates from them.

I've been really happy w/ a solid clutch of hypo syspila from this pair.
♀

♂ I need to up date his photo, he's much bigger these days.

Here are a few nates from the above pairing.

For some reason the message window wouldn't let me type any more so I'll end on these last photos.

Here is a hypo nate from last year w/ a hypo nate from this year.

I'll end on a Cherry co. two year old multistrata. And a Peacock Bass for Doug Mr. Mong.

Yeah, that 09 hypo was little at first, and I worried over him the first few months like my daughters worry over their stuffy animals. But he has proven to be very hardy and a big time eater.
Remember this old photo.

I sure do Dell. Man, that guy sure has taken off since then!

Excellent "cut-throat" there too!

in that first picture is my favorite!

Great pictures as always Dell.

Thanks for sharing!

Thanks Rusty, I liked the two photographed together too, just to document the size difference. Although I have to say after about 5 minutes the yearling tried to eat the smaller hypo while I was manning the camera. Yikes! He did a pretty good job at it too, wrapped the little guy up w/a good bite to the head to boot.
I broke them apart and don't plan on photographing them together any time soon.

I guess he's a good feeder then!

I had that happen many many years ago with a Eastern Hog. I was 8, and I didn't realize that the frog scent would be on the baby's face I just fed. Came back to the cage and found the baby half way down!

Everything turned out ok, but it freaked me out.

Glad you still have both nice hypos!

Dell:
As usual, stellar post and great pics. I love the syspilia. For some reason the hets moreso than the hypos but both are great.

Rob your sliding back in to old school appreciation of the wild type look. Nice!

Pretty soon you're going to be breeding those L. t. triangulum that hibernate in your basement every fall.

Let there be triangulum and lo, the milkhead was born.

Hey Jeff thanks a lot, nice to see you posting again, and you're the only one to say anything about the multistrata which I'm more happy about then just about anything in my snake room right now.

I know you're missing catching these guys. Ha ha me too.

Dell,

Sweet snakes! But I have to be honest with you, the hets could easily be hypos. Phenotypically how do you distinguish your two hets from the first hypo hatchling you posted? Personally I think the reds are identical and the black is the same width (hell, even the head is all mottled). But regardless, I think you have too many of those things and you should ameliorate your headache by sending them to me...I mean, I want your headache to go away!! Haha.

Honestly, great animals. I hope to see you guys next spring (my little man is growing up fast and I think he'll be okay if his dad leaves for a week next spring).

I was going to say the same thing. Even thought maybe a typo

Hi Tony,
No no, no typo. Read the above post to Mitch and it explains my thinking a little.

Hope you liked a few animals in there, and thanks for posting.

Heya Mitch, thanks for your concern w/ my headache, it's starting to go away already.

Some of those hets look brighter in photos, but I will say I have put up some hypos in past years and gotten taken to the wood shed for calling them hypo. So I thought I'd play it safe and only call a clear bright hypo a hypo although if you were to hold a questionable hypo in your hand you'd say "oh yeah that's a hypo", but from a photo it can be kind of hard to tell.
Here is one I took a little heat over. I can see where someone might not agree that it's a hypo, but in your hand it clearly is a hypo, just not as bright as the next snake below it.

Ha, only kidding the above two photos are the same snake. This is a little brighter hypo to be sure.

It'd be good to have you come out here to herp in 2011. Hopefully we can have as good a trip as this years was. Here's a teaser for ya.

Hill rats, as Jeff likes to call us.

How'd you take that 1st picture?

Is the snake on a piece of glass over a mirror?

zonatahunt Sep 28, 2010 03:40 AM

Dell,

Even without that snake in hand I'd call it a hypo. More than anything every hypo syspila I've seen has that mottled head pattern. Also, I don't know if they're true hypos (technically they are, because it's a reduced black...but not the type of hypo we're used to seeing). I have a pair, they're some of my favorite snakes, but their black isn't that lavender-grey that I'm used to seeing in other hypos. Personally I think those animals you are calling het are syspila hypos. Although their reds might be deeper than normal, their black is still super thin and their heads are what you'd expect on a hypo. Regardless, wow, I love those things!

As for making my way to Montana next year, yup, the wife and I have already discussed my trips and that is one I'm planning on (but we're also planning on another little one.....sooooooo, we'll see if I truly can head out there or not!!).

Thanks for the post, it's nice to see such nice snakes (multistr"i"ata included!).

Get that extra "i" out of there! Think about where we'd be if we let mistakes have a place in science... Lamarkism, anyone?! Ha ha ha ha!

Hope things work out and you get to come up here, buddy.

Great stuff as usual Dell. Love the reds.

I flipped this eastern hatchling a few weeks ago that reminded me a little of your "hypo" reds.

It had very little black, and alot of the blotches had no black at all. It definitely looked different than all other easterns I've found.
