bakeaway Sep 27, 2010 06:25 PM

Well it is 109 in Los Angeles today,,,,so i had to cool down the snakes,,,so i brought out the re-freezable ice packs (the hard plastic ones). Put one in each cage. And went back, Every snake was laying on it. It works well when my A/C cant keep the heat down,,as for me,,no ice,,,just bourbon,,,,

That's the main reason I have a window unit a/c in the snake room.....
Our heat index in South Texas was over 110 for 3 weeks straight this Summer........and many other times throughout the Summer it was well over 100....

109 is outrageously hot for Los Angeles........

Keep you and the animals cool......

BTW....Bourbon is for the winter.......Beir is for the Heat....LOL

Up here in the Motherlode of the Sierras it was a very cool summer. Spring was ridiculously wet and cold. Now it is fall and hot. The explanation I heard for this is the El Nino that normally is off the coast of South America has moved out to sea. Why it has done this I don't know. Global Warming? Weird weather extremes are predicted in the future due to Global warming.

My snakes are fine but this has confused my toads, who had buried themselves to hibernate but now are soaking in their water bowl again.

"Well, THAT was sure a short winter!"
The ice packs are a thing I have used as well. Wrapped in a towel, for the snakes to lay on.

Down here in the South we don't think there's any such thing as Global Warming....
It froze 4 times in Corpus Christi last year......Never done that before.....

The misconception with Global Warming is that everywhere it will just get hotter. But actually what is predicted to happen is extreme variables from the norm. So freezes in Corpus Christi and fall heat waves in LA are harbingers of more to come. Russia had a terrible heat wave this summer with major fires, the worst in recorded history. Then there was Pakistan, which had biblical flooding, worst in recorded history there.

I am wondering what will happen this winter in the Sierras. In 1951/52 it snowed 5 feet in my area. I was a little kid then and thought that was normal, and have been disappointed ever since. Good thing I still have my cross country skis! On the other hand, maybe I will just have to keep the swimming pool maintained for use...

These sort of events have got to be very hard on the wildlife!

It's just a cycle....
When George Washington's brigade was at Valley Forge in 1777 it was the coldest EVER there.......Some say it was a "Little Ice Age...."

We've seen hotter temps here where I live and we've seen colder temps here where I live.......

The weather is cyclic.....No Global Warming going on......Just like Y2K and 2012......LOL

I think there is more going on than the usual cycles, but then I don't have all the data needed to make an educated guess as to what is in the future. I do worry a lot more about getting hit by a meteor, though. We know they are out there! LOL!

Speak for yourself. I think we had a record for number of days over 90 this year. And I also think we had the hottest July on record...

No no no, not 90 -- days OVER 90.

It may or may not be hotter here next year. As someone else already pointed out, global "warming" really means global *instability*. It isn't just heat, it's increased fluctuations.

My point is we have 300 days over 90 were I live every year.....

You must be from California, eh?
You and Al Gore got it all figured out......LOL

yep...my A/C doesn't cool to the snake area as well,,that is why o just bought a Freedom Breeder rack so I can wheel it to the cooler area. But the ice packs help. It even cools the area around. I bought enough so i can constantly recycle them....

Sort of off topic, but this is my summer mouse tent in the shade. My mice breed all summer even during heat waves. I was going to bring them all back into the old RV they have for the winter a few weeks ago when it got cold, but my partner said maybe you should wait, and I am glad I listened.

It was 110 deg in my snake shed. I had moved the milks out to the house that morning, but I had no idea it was going to get that hot. I left a yearling boa constrictor in the shed on the floor (probably a bit cooler there, but still..)

Fortunately he survived the day and is fine, but that was a close call. He laughs at 90 deg has seen 100 deg days and handles that just fine, but this day was just brutal.
