Odd pastels? Input request

cid143ti Sep 27, 2010 07:01 PM

Hello,

Here are the results from my 3rd clutch this year. The clutch was 8 eggs with 5 normals, 2 pastels and 1 bad egg. They are the product bell line pastel to a normal female. Although not great odds with the outcome, I was a little curious about some of the patterns that developed. The second picture is of the 2 pastels. Do they look a little different than regular pastels? I know the pictures are not that great...I don't have access to great camera at the moment. Any input would be great appreciated.

Thanks,

W. Smith

What do the adults look like? From the blurry pic, I would say they look promising, but would like some additional pics.

Sorry for the blurry pics. I'll try to take some more with a better camera. The top pic is of the bell line male and the second pic is the normal female.

Thanks,

W. Smith

They do look a little different, but so do the normals. Better pics would make it easier, as the color is not right. What do the parents look like?

Now that I looked at the picture a little more, is it possible the female was a Granite? From the heads that I can see they have the break behind the neck, and the pattern on the normals look like granites.

Thanks for the reply. Here is a pic of the the normal babies. I thought they looked a little different too. I have also attached a pic of mom.

Very interesting. The "normals" look like granites to me, and the last two look like pastel granites? Definitely a nice project though!

Thanks for the reply. I always thought that granite was a dominant mutation and both of the parents do not display the granite phenotype. Not to mention, it looks like most of them seem to have some granite characteristics. If this was a simple recessive combo that produced granites I would think that fewer of the clutch would have displayed the trait. I know that het to het can lead to all kinds of ratios but on average 1/4 end up with the trait. Is there a simple recessive line of granite out there?

Thanks,

i actually produced some of the same exact looking snakes with my male pastel x female "normal" but all my babies have this granite look to them. Everyone that has seen them in person agrees that they are not just normal pastels or just normal normals...i produced 3 "norms" and three pastels. Im at work right now but i will try to post pics tomorrow for a comparison. No matter what congrats on the interesting clutch!

With the amount of dorsal stripes on that clutch I'd say your aberrance is due to temperature fluctuations and not genetics - but it will be fun to prove out - good luck!

How does fluctuation in Temperatures actually cause the Abberant look?

They remind me a little of a female I produced from breeding my Bell line Pastel to a striped normal female. Im posting pics of the Pastel female...unfortunately I no longer have her, but I'm repeating the pairing that produced her this year to see if I get more striped babies.

Here is a pic of her as a subadult (around 700g)

Nice looking snake. Thanks for posting the pics. Once they shed, I'll post pics of the clutch. The markings on your female pastel are fairly similar to one of the offspring. Your snake has a really nice color again. Keep me posted if you get eggs from the pairing again this year. I'm gonna try the pairing again this year if the female is willing.

Thanks,

W. Smith
