Now do us all a favor and leave the tank alone for a week. Dont straighten anything out, no replanting. No alterations. Lets see what it looks like in a week....great experiment!

wccs2001 Sep 28, 2010 03:08 PM

well. on that note. he's already shifted one plant and has burrowed himself under the water bowl.

Come on, let the experiment take its course. At the end of a week when it looks like a bomb went off in there that is info ALOT would like!

wccs2001 Sep 28, 2010 03:51 PM

i haven't. the way i look at it, he's just rearranging the furniture to his liking. it's his house anyway. :D

I can't wait to see! I have several that apparently don't want any water at all because they instantly turn over their freshly filled bowls. Don't want a hide box either, just push it around. Sometimes I just want to thunk them on their heads!

thunk

a friend had a snake....would not eat (baby)...it was acting up way too much...he flicked it in the head and said just eat you little...oops...snake rolled over...he thought it was dead....nope...it was knocked out...came to...and ate from that day on......! TRUE stuff and funny.....so go ahead...thunk them....LOL........let us know how that goes.....

...and yes...I have 1.2 campbelli...aspen -thick ,water bowl and moss filled gallon container with them...I had to use a bowl that weighs like 5 pounds....bomb in 5 minutes if not....

is mine abnormal? he does dig. but he never dumps his bowl. or his log. nothing i put in there. he climbs all over it, but pretty much leaves it intact. it's been 24 hours. or more. and except for one tile that's been moved, and the plant that he lifted up, but didn't knock over, and where he's dug a tunnel under the water bowl, it's all still fine.

Never is longer than 24 hours. I'm just saying get back to us in a week....

wccs2001 Sep 28, 2010 04:23 PM

hide and seek...

the 'uprooted' plant. all the plants are in buckets. i thought that would deter him from completely destroying the whole thing. we'll see.

one side of the water bowl is lifted up. you know. i think he thinks he's completely hidden. with his head just barely poking out and all (first pic. did you find him?)

anyway. :D i'll keep documenting his 'progress'. i also planted a brooksi king tank and leopard gecko tank. even though the king burrowed herself, she hasn't done much damage to the layout. she's a lot smaller then him though. the geckos dug some loose soil around their log hide, but didn't touch anything else.

I can't wait to see how the brooksi destroys his quarters. If it were bigger, it would definitely look like a bomb went off inside the tank!..LOL!

he had all night to dig and wallow, but there's no change this morning. :D tank still looks good. i see holes /everywhere/ but plants are still in their places.

so far so good.

Beautiful snake, and milks love dirt!

Actually, if you use a larger pot with some weight in the bottom, you can have a plant or two with less chance of rearranging.

thank you. he's my baby. my first snake.

the only reason i didn't do bigger pots was i thought he would be more likely to dig down in the actual pot and do more damage (uprooting and killing the plant).

Just curious, but, doesn't the soil mix seem a bit too damp for both snake and plant species alike? I mean, I do realize that some of the central and South American Lampropeltis triangulum ssp's like its somewhat humid, but that soil looks almost wet.

wccs2001 Oct 02, 2010 09:40 AM

that picture was just after i had planted them, so it was a little damp then. since then, it's dried out significantly. when i water, i only water the cups the plants are in, not the dirt in the cage.

the dirt is a potting soil, sand and pea gravel mix. i did it by sight, so the mix is approximately 1:1/2:1.

i had to dig him out yesterday for feeding which disturbed the dirt more than he had. looks like i'm being more of the bomb than he is.

i'll take pictures again on tuesday.

The potting soil was without any fertilizers right? I've found that alot of store bought potting soils actually come with some slight degree of plant fertilizers...probably not the best thing for a snake that burrows? Funny enough, the plants you chose to use appear to be a cane plant and a similar species. I've used them before in planted vivariums for smaller herps, and found a blend of peat, pea gravel, some sand, and cocofiber/mulch worked extremely well for the plants, and for keeping any burrows up.
Good luck!

wccs2001 Oct 03, 2010 07:52 AM

it was a natural top soil mixture with peat moss added. no fertilizer or perlite. i had to research a good bit before finding a completely natural and clean soil mix. the plants are spider plant (zebra grass), 2 types of dracaena, and pony tail palm. they all get fairly big, but i plan on splitting, replanting with new baby plants and transplanting larger ones to house plants as they outgrow the tanks.
