Ficus benjamina

colaris Sep 28, 2010 04:19 PM

I have a question regarding Ficus benjamina and its fruits. Is it ok to use its leaves and fruits as Cyclura, Ctenosaura and Iguana food (or better yet, can I allow them to eat it non restrict)? My iguanas have it on their outdoor enclosures and they do nible on all of its parts. I assume its safe, actually I selected this species because I knewed it was non toxic but the igs were not supossed to eat it by the mouth fulls with a big plate of veggies present. If need be I will take the trees down. Thanks for your help

I wouldn't worry about it. A lot of animals eat the berries without any problems at all. I catch all types of iguanas and anoles in Ficus all the time. The usually do not eat large amounts of the leaves because I guess they taste bad.

My rhinos and tegus make ficus figs a large part of their diet in the summer, the tegus practically live on them. KB
