World First!!!

chad_proexotics Sep 28, 2010 10:44 PM

We at Pro Exotics have taken some heat in the forums for our work at crossing our ratsnakes. While we have had plenty of folks who love the crosses and are happy to see them, there has also been a few vocal folks who are anti. This latest cross is sure to get folks talking no matter what side you sit on the issue of crosses.
Introducing the worlds first Mandarin x Hognose!!! We got two good eggs out of the clutch and both hatched. Interesting to note that the pattern is all Mandarin (just smashed closer together) and the body type is all Hognose. I'll post more photos when they shed. Man, this stuff is fun!!!

I'm not really sure what to think about this, actually. I want to think it's a joke, but what we want to think and reality are sometimes very different.

I have a pretty neutral stance on hybrids. There are some I like and some I'm pretty biased against because I liked the original snakes all by themselves. Otherwise for the most part I think they're interesting. With this, I'm not really sure where I stand.

Okay, I'm going to be honest. What were you thinking? Not trying to be rude, I think it's a valid question.

You'd at least think that crossing a short chubby snake with slender one would yield something somewhat in between. But this to me looks like a bad accident happened in someone's incubator.

I normally try to be nice about things like this. I don't like offending people. But good luck getting them to eat and survive, with both of the parent species being known as problem feeders. No, really, now that they're out of the egg I really hope they can actually have an enjoyable life. And I thought sand boas were short and stubby. At least they're cute.

Maybe this is a joke and I'm just not getting it.

Wow, that is incredible! I find it amazing that it took the colors of the manadarin and the body of the hog, no in between. I'm all for hybrids, I think they're beautiful, but I would have posted this in the hybrids forum, so be prepared for the backlash. Anyways, beautiful snake and congrats.

I'm pretty sure this is a joke...

That has got to be a joke! Looks like a malformed mandarin. Jeff

I hope this is a joke. Another step towards biological perversion is not what this hobby needs. Also, very dissapointing if it is indeed not a joke. Chad, my favorite team is the Seahawks for crying out loud!

The snake looks like a baby that didn't form properly and fully in the egg. I have seen baby cal kings before come out like that, in terms of how the body is shaped.

So, at this point, I am hoping that this is indeed a joke.

Yeah, it looks like a dead, deformed Mandarin to me.

now cross it out to a ruthveni.....like all the others.....and then toss in some carpet python......NICEK!!!!!

SoLA Sep 29, 2010 08:16 PM

I picked two animals even less often bred than mandarins and hognose snakes. I bred neotrical bird snakes with the poop from 3 different neotropical birds : )

Really though, I thought your joke was funny. The mandarin is dead though right? If not, it will be interesting to see how long it makes it. I am not one to freeze something just because it comes out a little abnormal. As long as they can function normally I say let them enjoy life.

This one unfortunately never did take a meal ...

robyn@ProExotics Sep 29, 2010 11:00 PM

I once crossed poop and a popsicle, but that didn't turn out well either. Sorry, no pics.

Our next cross to hatch is a Boelen's python and a Coxi. Looking to create a 13 ft orange snake with black striping.

We actually did have two of those Mandarins. Crazy that they could develop so oddly, and make it so late into a hatching stage. Pattern, color, but non viable.

The vivid color was what made me wonder if it was that late it might have actually made it out of the egg alive.

I laughed at the joke right away because I could almost hear one person saying it looked like the body of a hognose and another saying "OH I have an idea." And I probably would have not been able to resist either lol.

robyn@ProExotics Sep 30, 2010 03:48 PM

That is just about exactly what happened : )

Ok, you guys are right. It is a dead deformed mandarin baby.
I've seen lots of weird looking things in eggs before, but nothing that looked like this one. There were two eggs in the clutch that had babies in the eggs that looked like this.
I couldn't resist posting it as a joke, sorry if I offended anyone!

I am way too serious sometimes.
But I was 90% sure it was a joke, so I think I get half points. Points were deducted for my anality, for fairness.

You know, that was a damn good joke! Had shock value, got some feathers ruffled, and I guess it kind of eased the pain of losing those two eggs. Plus that, it ended up being the best giggle I've had in a month...

Thank you!
I love it when someone gets my jokes!

I was thinking photoshop! Very funny, made me chuckle.

You crossed a snake and a watermelon?

That IS offensive!

Tasty though...

You have to be careful crossing snakes with watermelons...
If you don't use seedless melon plants, you can get "pit" vipers!

I saw the first post of this thread the other day. I must admit that I am disappointed that it was a "hoax", or a joke as the case may be. I wish I would have found out last week. I would not have waster the last week trying to cross a toad with one of my mice. I wanted to be on first base for producing prey items for them. Now I have a toad and a mouse that will not look me in the eye any more. I am ashamed.

BillMcgElaphe Oct 05, 2010 06:23 PM

Ok..... That's funny... I don't care who you are....

I envision a mouse with genital warts....
