Do you know why you lost him? The cause? I always get paranoid when I hear stuff like this. I recently invested in several baby boas. First boas I've had since I was a kid. I'm 32 now. They're all doing great, but I would hate for something to go wrong. I'm curious about some of the problems/issues some of you have faced. Anyone please share. You can keep it short. I would really appreciate it! Thanks!

I had a necropsy done and the outcome was Bacterial Septicemia or blood poisoning. I lost a others within a 6 mo time period. 3 necropsies done, bacterial and/or salmonella findings. Why? who really knows....the feeders I used were suspect. Other became sick but were saved with a series of injections of Fortex/Amikacin. $8k lost and another $10k invested to replace them. I worry every time one refuses to eat until they eat again.

Yep that's exactly what I went through and I can only suspect my
feeders somehow led to the outcome of Bacterial sepsis
in my case as well.

I still believe some type of fat has some horrible effect on
digestion and leads to that bacterial bloom.

Absolutely no way to prove my theory though !

There really was no replacing what I lost,
the Boas were mature 4 & 5 year olds

So on top of loosing beautiful Boa specimens, I lost time ,
there is no replacing time !

Time is the most important asset we have !

I'm sure he was just refering to bad rats and nothing with the actual snake...Big Mike wrote an article on "fat rats" he has it on his site.

Right i remember the article
But here is my Question I feed f/t and was curious if freezer burn could contribute to this or even the thaw process it takes me quite a while to fully thaw out a jumbo rat usually 4 hours it makes me wonder if that contributes to bacteria on the animal i mean it sounds stupid but it really isn't when you think about it
bacteria can multiply in temps between 65 and 104 degrees what is the temp of the hot water bath you give your f/t's i thought about that maybe it isn't bad rats but miss handling either by us or the rat breeder? second we dont know how long the f/t's have been in the freezer lol
I mean hell we could start a full discussion off of this alone makes you wonder what is being thawed out when you feed f/t's
its not like you can throw a rat in a boil in bag and serve that to your snake lol
Sorry Brandon I read your post and as always a good point but I think this would make everyone wonder to lol
I wonder what would happen if a vet or some science person did a tox on a frozen Rat from some of the breeders and kept track of the bacteria and core temps from start to finish just to see how safe frozen thawed actually is for our beloved animals
i use a rodentry service myself so this would be interesting to see the conclusions of what the results were lol

My God! That is frightening to read. I feel TERRIBLE for you guys. I hope and pray this never happens to me. How could it be prevented? Breed your own feeders?

raybrooks1 Sep 30, 2010 09:11 PM
