Sulfur Lavs for Foxturtle

Nokturnel Tom Sep 30, 2010 05:26 PM

I am sure you have seen the difference but to better illustrate my take on this I included these pics.
The neon outrageous one is what I call a 100% Sulfur Lav
The more "pastel" not so flashy one is a 50% Sulfur Lav
,
,
,
I was told the founding animal that was a Sulfur Lav was a super fluorescent animal that had never been exactly reproduced. It's offspring were like the one I call a 100% Sulfur Lav. There have not been many of these, the "real" ones out there and coincidentally I have seen more fake ones lately than I ever have before...
I know of many different flavors of Lavender involving Sulfur and they're all cool but I will have to let everyone know how I make out since my 100% Sulfur Lav breeder females died on me.
Many times the babies I see from a 100% Sulfur Lav bred to other types of Lavs yield less dramatic babies as far as the neon colors. I have to see what I have that would be a suitable mate to begin a project where I will eventually breed a baby to the father.
I can easily tell the difference in adults, and though I have seen and even own 50% Sulfur Lavs that are extremely nice I can spot a real 100% one a mile away.
While everyone ponders that,,, look a cool Cal King!

That darker one is gorgeous! Does anyone have pics of "normal" Sulfur adults? I know Bob S. has the best one I've seen so far.

I can see what you mean by 100% and 50%. In the case of the two you posted, I wouldn't even call the 50% a Sulfur at all. I realize that it can be difficult to express the various gradations of Sulfur Lavender outcrosses that exist today.

As one of the few people who has non-outcrossed Sulfur kings, I will say that there is room for improvement in the Sulfur Lavender lines. Some of what I have seen from the "pure" Sulfur lines are miles ahead of anything I've seen from the Sulfur Lavender Lines.

If I were to take what you are calling a 100% Sulfur Lavender and breed it back to one from my Sulfur line, what would I have then? A 150% Sulfur Lavender? An Extreme Sulfur Lavender?

Hatchling Sulfur Florida King:

Nokturnel Tom Oct 02, 2010 08:01 PM

I would never have guessed the snake in the pic is Sulfur?
The light one...50%, that was a runt... I literally amost froze it a few times but wouldnt you know it, it ended up getting past it and is now doing great.
I have 2 adults... 100% and 50% and I hope I can photograph them next for you so you get an idea of how this baby "should" look.
I have seen 100% Sulfur Lav bred to Extreme Lav and those babies have their own look too.... much more purple than yellow...
I will follow up when i can,
Do you have pics of what a baby like you just posted will end up looking like as an adult?

"Do you have pics of what a baby like you just posted will end up looking like as an adult?"

That is the only one like it from what I understand. That was a bizarre aberrant individual that he just produced very similar to the weirdo extremely aberrant "high-yellow" brooks I produced last year. As a matter of fact, it looks virtually identical to what mine looked like as a hatchling at that age.

That thing should be a neon yellow BOMB later on is what I am thinking..LOL!

I wish I had pictures from back when I visited Len Krysko's place in 2003. He had some pretty amazing Sulfurs that were real high color and had wide bands. I'm not sure if they were as extreme as the oddball I produced this year, but they were better than the adults I've got right now.

DMong Oct 02, 2010 10:36 PM

Yeah, I'd really like to see some of the one's he had!

Here is a before and after pic of the weird anomaly brooks I produced last year. He is really turning on the intense yellows now, and his solid red is becoming a very intense orange/yellow now. No doubt he will be a neon glowing yellow banana when he fully matures..LOL!

as a new hatchling....

and him fairly recently at exactly 12 months old........

Wow. Give that guy another year and he will be ridiculous!

DMong Oct 02, 2010 10:57 PM

Yes, he will be totally SICK in another year man!

Hey, are you now planning on keeping that weirdo, and not selling it to the one guy you told me about earlier?

If so, good for YOU!..LOL!

Haha... He put money down for sulfurs, and I'm pretty sure he wants this one! He's supposed pick it up from me next week.

It's alright though, I still have the parents, and I have another adult pair of sulfurs ready to go for next year.

DMong Oct 02, 2010 11:38 PM

Yeah, I am guessing he definitely won't turn that one down..HAHA!!

But like you said, you still have the parents and some other sweet individuals.

I don't have pictures of any that hatched out like that as adults. That one is going to look ridiculous. The sulfurs I've raised from hatchlings have all gained a lot of yellow, and maintained a good amount of their juvenile orange color.

For example, this one hatched with a cool pattern, but colorwise pretty average looking:

2 years later he is a "neon yellow bomb", and still has a lot of growing to do:

DMong Oct 02, 2010 10:30 PM

Wow!, awesome difference indeed Nick!
