Largest Hondo neonate ever?

RG Oct 01, 2010 12:57 PM

Just wondering what you all have experienced regarding Hondo neonate length?

I knew this clutch was much larger than anything I've hatched out before, but I didn't realize just how big until I measured them!

Most of the clutch is over 16 inches long, like this beauty:

This one might be the largest one in the group, over 18 inches:

These Hondos are just two weeks old and are just now (last two evenings) eating their first meals!

These Hondos are uncommonly large, correct?

Are Black Milk neonates bigger?

I'll measure my Black Milk neonates in a week and let you know.

Yeah Rusty, those are no doubt very large babies. I have produced some huge one's in the past, but never actually measured them, so I don't know exactly how long they really were. I wish I did though.

Anyway, yeah, some can be quite variable, and even from the same female year to year too.

I also ended up with a few over 16 inches (measured) and one or two that appear to be 18 plus (can't get an accurate measurement on those). I had a dead-in-egg albino that I laid next to a ruler and got a confirmed 16 and it was NOT the biggest of the bunch.
The eggs came from two females of around 400g and 1100g.

I was hoping some other folks had some pictures with something in the photo for size reference.

Oh, well...not a huge deal!

Thanks anyway!

Dniles Oct 02, 2010 06:30 AM

Wow Rusty those are huge!! In my experience, I never hatched out any gaigeae that were bigger than that!

What would you consider a normal length for a gaigeae?

-Rusty

Dniles Oct 05, 2010 09:24 PM

umm...didn't produce any this year but I would say around 14" or so?

Nice Rusty, very big neonates indeed. Always nice to have big nates out of the egg.

You must have a pair of every milk know to man!

Nice pic as always!

Congrats Rusty,
In my experience, the amels I've hatched have always been larger than any other morph. I never really measured but I've had some between the 30-40 gram mark (only weighed one year out of curiousity). Although most of my hondos were larger than many neonates I've seen. I chalked it up to a longer incubation with lower temps. I've never had a hondo hatch anywhere close to 60 days, more like 75-82, so they come out fairly large.

Of course I often had cluthces hatch well into Nov and Dec because there isn't any interest between dam and sire until May-June.

Great stuff regardless,

RG Oct 05, 2010 09:39 AM

That seems to be the link to huge size...Amel lineage...and cooler/longer incubation times.

Mine were exactly in line with yours...80 - 83 days.
