Aren't they just the prettiest little girls? Due to arrive next Tuesday from Gerold Merker. Note the red markings on their heads, and how white their noses are. They just shed so one had a bit of shed still on her but it came right off, no problem.

Very nice. Where is Chircahua?

Do you have a link to the Merkers' website?

Since you have only 12 snakes, that should not be too much of a hard sell!
What I have:
1.1 Stillwater x Kingsville bulls
2.3 Pacific gopher snakes
3.6 pyromelana
A modest collection, not nearly as many as JLassiter has! He has more mexicana than the state of Texas has rattle snakes! LOL!

LOL......
Point the finger at Rainer....He has more....So does Tom Stevens......LOL

But I do have my DREAM collection almost finished Bob......

And it is a pain to convince the wife I need more snakes when there are 130 snakes in the herp room and I am thinking about expanding it......

We agree that she will get a new purse, shoes, clothing or jewelry every time I spend money on an addition to the collection...

So....My collection has cost me about double.....LMAO!!!

Heh heh! You're lucky she doesn't want expensive electronic toys! Although I guess lady type things like shoes and jewelry can be pretty expensive, too.

My collection now contains 4.7.0 pyros. I took a little road trip today and picked up a hatchling pair with high band count. This is it for awhile.

When the last ones arrive tomorrow I will do a photo shoot of all the new ones (five) in their feeding jars. Sometimes babies eat right out of the shipping box, other times they take several days to acclimate to their new homes. I always offer food right away; usually they arrive pretty hungry.

Beauiful young ladys, here is a 2010 male that would love to court them in a few years. LOL

Oh, he IS a nice one! I like how he has the red on his head! In a few years this would be a good match for the girls.
How I discovered Gerold's snakes is he had an ad at Kingsnake.com for Sonoran Mountain kings, which I stumbled across while using the text search tool in my tool bar; I had typed in ora looking for these orange Thayeries I kind of wanted, and it led to Gerold's ad for generic Sonoran Mountain kings, and the Chiricahuas in another ad. Hence I forgot all about the Thayeri and first got a high banded generic male and now am getting these females.

The little male right out of the shipping box. He is a great eater!

Thanks!
I now have nine pyros of assorted ages. Possibly ten, as I am visiting another breeder today to look at his pyro hatchlings. He says he has a high count band one which is very interesting, worth a two hour drive. This will complete my small pyro collection; next step is to continue to grow them up and after that the challenge of breeding some of them. I wanted to start out with a diverse gene pool, hence so many from assorted breeders.

I have 2.2 08 pyros but although the females are both quite big and vigorous eaters, and the larger of the males is also a good size match for them, I am not sure they are old enough to actually breed next year. I have read that size is just as important as age, and that if the female is big enough, it is okay to breed younger.

What do you think about this?

I think if they brumate, and the female produced egg follicles, I'd rather have them be fertilized than infertile....Sometimes egg-binding is the result of infertile eggs sticking to the oviduct......Fertile eggs do not.......

Size is more important than age in my opinion......I had 1.1 2008 Mex Mex successfully reproduce this year at under 2 years of age......Some Holbrooki did for me too......All around 150 to 180 grams......I hear Pyros will go at 125 grams or so.....By 3 years of age mine are all usually well over that......

My 08 pyro females are at 192 grams and 178 grams as of September 12 '10. Their male partner is at 156 grams, a good match for the girls.

They have stopped eating for the season and soon will go into brumation when the weather gets cold enough for me to put them in the brumation chamber (the cold spot in my cabin). I have turned off their heaters already.

A side note: I talked to the breeder I got them from when I visited him to pick up my newest babies, and he once again did not think that Zunchara (the one with the big white bands) was from any of his stock. I looked at all his breeders and nobody looks like her, so I agree. I had originally gotten her and Dotz from Bill Gillingham, and subsequently got the contact number for the breeder from Bill. The other female Dotz is the breeder's. The male Mazar (with less black)is from Scott Powley. So if they breed I will have babies from three different genetic lines.

Cool...
Sounds like they are big enough to me....And it's great to have genetic diversity unless you are line breeding for a certain look.......

At this point if they just breed at all I will be ecstatic! LOL! Fortunately brumating them is easy; I brumated my bulls last winter under my computer station in the bedroom, where it is always cold all winter. So Mazar should have live rounds when the time comes. Also they all like to eat, especially in the spring, so it should not be too hard to build them up in preparation for breeding.
If all goes well and I get babies that look like Zunchara of the wide white bands I will maybe try a little line breeding there.

Gerold took the photo of the girls. I took the picture of the little male.
I like the pyros because they seem to be the easiest snakes to work with, as well as being great eye candy.
